The state-of-the-art of direct-reaction engines in 1928 is described. The principle of reaction engines is discussed, and the history of rocket and direct-reaction engine development is summarized. Special emphasis is given to the work of D. P. Ryabushinskii, Giovanni Penna, and Antonio de Stefano. Theoretical investigations proposed by various scientists for clarifying the operation of reaction engines are outlined, and the fundamentals of interplanetary flight are explained.
