This book belonged to my great grandmother. It has been in the family since she purchased it in the 1850's. The picture it paints of the poor house conditions at that time is quite revealing. In many ways the northern Chattels were really not as well off as those in the south.
I think this book tells a similar story as did Uncle Tom's Cabin and did much to start the movement for improved conditions in the Northern poor houses.
Well worth reading for the historical perspective it gives as well as the literary style of the time.
