.....does this band keep getting better or what? The addition of Johnson is huge! Their sound is great.

Subject: Monsoon melts the crowd at The Fillmore
A fired up NM comes in to town to a sold out crowd, ripping up two sets of music with both Rajiv and Brian onstage at various times + Mr Dan Lebowitz, killing on lapsteel. Traveling Gypsies and Double Clutch were highlights for me and esp the lead in to a gorgeously played African Rain. Miller continues to improve his vocals chops having been thrown in to the role after original NM bassist and lyricist Heath Carlisle left the band abruptly. Everyone is playing great and the crowd is pumped. Interaction btw Lebo and Miller was smoking, Marty was thumping his heart out, Bo was clearly psyched to be on stage and Pianimal Phil Ferlino sounded as great as ever. Ron Johnson (ex KDTU) in the bass slot sends the group to new funkified heights as neither of the last two Monsoon bassists ever could (though I think they are both fine players, Heath and Ben, Johnson's playing is just at a different level). The NM5 if that is going to be the band's basic config going forward has huge potential but I've been seeing the band for years so I will prob always miss and have a special spot in my heart for the 3 pc percussion dynamo that is/was Raj, Marty and Brian. I also really enjoyed the Floyd cover on the two tune encore. Also check out Tahoe area group Blue Turtle Seduction who opened for the boys - solid set w/ a cool new one "Go Big or Go Home" and a nice Outkast cover (Call before I come). The night was just wonderful and included a bonus, hearing for the first time the Yosemite area acoustic quartet, The Trespassers (www.thetrespassers.com) who played some sweet sets in the poster room. Thank you Lobster for this really fine recording, if you were there you get to relive this magical night of live music and if you were not, now you get to hear what NM sounded like on their hometown Fillmore 1st headliner, which they nailed in style selling out the premier SF venue. Enjoy!
