Subject: One Hell of a show
What a night, all the performances were great, and its really unfortunate that Northwoods didn't win, they put on ONE HELL OF A SHOW. And that almost might have hurt them in winning new votes since they flowed so effortlessly from one song to another without giving the crowd a break to stop dancing, to cheer or realize its a different song. But you can feel the energy from the crowd the entire time during the songs. Its so hard to pack in a great show in a 45 minute time slot with the goal of competing to play more music. I personally don't feel that competition has any place in music, but thats just me.
Goulash starts it out heavy and strong. I love the slap bass part, and when the song comes back in hard after a break down at about 4:30 is sick. Jake is just shredding throughout , and then without breaking a sweat it goes into Song for the Wind. Joel just lays out the vocals nice and thick. In my opinion he has one of the best voices in the entire mid-west scene. The song hangs on long enough for Ben to drop the bass-line for Your Mother is an Astronaut. This song kicks so much a@@ its not even funny. The sax and guitar interplay is so nice, and then there's Joel's voice again. He just belts it out at the end. You can feel the passion and conviction behind his words.
Then there's the rhythm section song, and there's actually a name now for the drums and bass jam, which i forget. Ben just lays the slap and harmonics out there so nicely with charlie holding it down and filling it all. Next the call to action with Song for the (W). This song drops nicely into a laid back jam which eventually builds back up to chorus and eventually the acapella ending into Termomother. Its such a heavy and dynamic instrumental. Again, the builds and break-downs are great. And ending with General Tso's is always a great choice. The trance/house/whatever you call it part always gets people dancing and the entire song just rocks. Great stuff all around.
I definitely feel that 10K missed out on this band, but hopefully next year. If you feel they should be there, let 10K know. This show should be evidence enough.
The .gif image doesnt necessarily portray the rock-star pics that Heath took, but you get the point. What he can do with a camera is amazing. No photoshop or editing used, just mastery of his camera. When its available ill post the link to the full quality versions of these.
The jam at the end of the night was fun. It was all good but some highlights for me was seeing joel play some brass with another player. Kevin Klemme (trumpet), who just dominates that thing, and Joel were hitting some great stuff. Then Ben Peterson's bass solo was awesome. Just listen for yourself, theres some fun covers and nice jaming.
