Subject: My short review on the the night.
Well ill second the Mark Whidden section of this show gets 5 stars, all i can say is WOW, this stuff is beautiful. Listening to this you can tell good he is, but you really have to see him doing this to grasp how talented he actually is. He's got a volume pedal cranked coming from his acoustic to an amp (which we got buzz from that or his pickup, but its minimal) so it picks up every little tap that he's playing up and down the neck of the guitar. He plays so well it sounds some times like he's got loop pedals in the mix. Check him out live if you ever have the chance, but now on to Northwoods.
The mix is nice and even (thanks Stino), everything sounds good other than the occasional crackling from the bass (barmitzvah especially) . There are a few flubs, but your always going to get that. It still was solid the whole way through. Theres a little feedback in a couple spots, but not bad. We had some issues with the speakers and had to switch some out towards the end but the problem didn't come out on the recording.
I thought it was a great show with some oldies but goodies mixed in. It was nice seeing "Standin", one of the original NWB songs in the set. Hearing old Fiber Optic Follicle (pre-northwoods) lyrics of "I Don't Know Yet" mixed in to Batter was also a nice treat. Then barmitzvah, I remember seeing Joel and his cousin Colin playing this at Trout Fest and in the Green Lantern basement as West Hit Street (Joel (guitar), Colin (guitar), Jake Illika (bass) and Rory Harding (Drums)). I even asked for this song before the show started and joel said they don't like playing it anymore, liar. You can hear joel chuckle in the first 20 seconds of that song because of my expression when it started. Moonlight Rider, Personal Prisoner, James and Step On are also early NWB songs that are still just as rocking. Im still waiting for Game Show Contestant (in a somewhat original form), hint hint.
The new song, Song for the (W) (thats supposed to represent a circle around it with a line through it but since I cant represent that in text, (W) is how its being posted) is getting tighter and tighter. The bass throughout is sick. Then the second set just rocks, with barmitzvah into Termomother (one of my favorites) into the nasty Jam/Beef Tits (another favorite) is great.
Beginnings is always a great ride, seeing it in different shows, the parts of the song get changed around and it always keeps me on my toes. The short but sweet drum and bass jam is pretty sweet also. I see a little claypool or jaco influence in it, which is always cool. Its nice seeing all the members working on different little projects with each other, keep your eyes open for all the cool stuff/side projects coming out of the northwoods camp.
General Tso's always kills, the the breakdowns are so nice. Then to close the show, Goulash. That is such a hard-hitting song. And the main parts to that are also early NWB. Then they came back out and encored with Song for the Wind (i thought they were done and started shutting down the computer), its just a nice laid back way to end the night. Joel just belts those words out so nicely. I give the entire show 5 stars (opener and NWB) for all the reasons i have listed. Well, im not sure if this was quite long enough, next time i might just try posting their whole life story in here. But what i was trying to say is it was a pretty cool show for a longtime fan. i guess i could have just said that.

Subject: Opener is well worth the listen
Thanks for getting some Mark Whidden up here, Mikey. PLEASE give a listen to the unnamed tracks at the beginning of the audio files list.
Mark Whidden is a good friend of Northwoods, and an excellant guitarist/musician. Most of this stuff on the recording is his original material, if not all. We will work on getting a track list up soon, but until then, enjoy and ask for him at 10KLF, Project Earth, Fat Fest, Harvest Fest, everything. This guys is amazing - the star rating for the show is for mark w.
