Here's a Dem, there's a Dem...
Interesting overview of the democrats choice for president in 1928.. Al Smith seems like an ok guy.. His VP choice seems a bit wound up though. In this film, we see some of their convention "in Houston in Texas", which looked terribly uncomfortable. No wonder Al is laughing from his comfortable office. We get shots of him on the road with his wife, and what is later to be revealed as his grandchild (thank heavens) . Joe Robinson is also profiled. He seems a bit more aloof, especially in the first clip where he's wearing a too tight jacket it seems. The film ends with us seeing OTHER demos, like Woodrow Wilson, to prove.... What? There are other dems out there?
Al didn't win by the way, he lost to Herbert Hoover. The nation was scared that, as the first Roman Catholic nominee ever for a political party, he would seek advice from the Pope then the Constitution in times of crisis. Interesting stuff!
