From IMDB:When the ancient continent of Mu sank beneath the ocean, some of its inhabitant survived in caverns beneath the sea. Cowboy singer Gene Autry stumbles upon the civilization, now buried beneath his own Radio Ranch. The Muranians have developed technology and weaponry such as television and ray guns. Their rich supply of radium draws unscrupulous speculators from the surface. The peaceful civilization of the Muranians is corrupted by the greed from above, and it becomes Autry's task to prevent all-out war, ideally without disrupting his regular radio show.

Reviewer:filmsplice - - January 31, 2008 Subject: See it, folks...you'll love it. I heartily agree with the other reviewer. This one's a trip in terms of story, very bizarre, and Autry's appearances and his music are just fine (Sons Of The Pioneers fans should see this one). Even the feature condensation is pretty good, but the full serial is highly recommended. Would also like to see the Tom Mix serial The Miracle Rider again, too: saw it as a kid, about thirty years ago, and it had a similar (though not as strange) mix of westerns action and science fiction, and it's good, too.
Reviewer:Vance Capley - - January 29, 2008 Subject: THE PHANTOM EMPIRE IS ONE OF THE BEST!!! I saw this when I was a kiddo on our local pbs station. I loved it then and I love it more now!!! Cowboys + science fiction= awesome! I recently showed this to MY kids. They loved it! Of course they complained about the lack of color, but SO what! Show the youth this little gem. It is not the best serial by any measure, that award goes to the Adventures of Captain Marvel. But I would rank this in the top 6.
