The mystery remains until the very last scene when the murderer is revealed to be...
Mostly good journeyman performances by the cast. The script gets a bit thin and the direction is spotty in places but all in all, watching this film is worth a rainy afternoon.

Drama critic solves murder with the aid of a cabbie named Romeo--if that sounds good to you, you will enjoy. It reminds me of fast-moving but disposable radio dramas of the time. I enjoyed it, but the mystery is thin and the resolution happens too fast.

These romantic mysteries from the past are full of information about the lifestyles and concerns of the individuals who went to see them. With careful observation, one can gain insight into the clothing styles, décor and fashion of the period. Very educational.

Claudia Moore (Kay Aldridge) is so sweet, innocent, naive, affectionate girl with tender loving heart. Such a girl can NEVER do any bad thing. She's like a beautiful good fairy. Only her smile can open flowers. She is so pure and innocent!

A killer is haunting a theater, and is bent on murdering members of a theatrical family. A theater critic investigates, reluctantly at first. We learn halfway through the movie who the killer most likely is. We just don't know what he looks like. The forum scene from Shakespeare's Julius Caesar is staged to entice the killer into the open.
An overly wordy screenplay without any meat to it, and dull at that makes for a tepid murder mystery. No snappy dialog. The one(!) good reveal isn't accompanied with any drama or musical punctuation. There are two subplots that go nowhere, but could have made the movie interesting. Oh, the leads do well enough, even Jack Mulhall as police Lt. Walsh. Why didn't the police just search the theater when the killer hid? Really, the only highlights in the movie are Frank Jenks as cab driver/sidekick Romeo, and his wannabe girlfriend/coffee shop waitress Ginger (Vera Marshe), and they're there for comedy relief. I agree with Shadow Girl's conclusion.
I downloaded the 512Kb MPEG4 file. Video and audio quality were good.

This is an enjoyable movie. It has creditable actors with Dave O'Brian and Alan Mowbray; the action moves along nicely; there is some comic relief with the cab driver and waitness; romance; and some good relationships between the police department and the newspaperman (O'Brian). It was well worth my time to view.

There's not much to say except that this was a solid performance for a B-movie. I remember the excellent part played by Alan Mowbray in "My Man Godfrey" done in 1937 along side of William Powell. I rate this one a good solid three stars.

Dave O'Brien, who did a great job playing off Bela Lugosi in 1940's THE DEVIL BAT returns, this time as a theater critic rather than as an investigative reporter but it works out much the same. Surrounding him in THIS effort (besides Kay Aldridge whose last movie this was) are some really good character actors like Alan Mowbray (he played Inspector Lestrade in the 1933 version of A STUDY IN SCARLET, you'll remember, and made a darned good opponent for the Warner Oland incarnation of Charlie Chan just a year later) and Jack Mulhall (who will forever be enshrined in the hearts of movie lovers for his portrayal of Craig Kennedy in the 1936 serial THE CLUTCHING HAND but you can spot him in a lot of movies and serials through the 20s and 40s.
PHANTOM is predictable but good enough for a sleepless night (and much more fun than infomercials). I'll give this one three stars.

Don't let the negative comments on the IMDb put you off watching this above average B movie thriller. It's no use complaining about what the film could, or might, have been. Like other B films of the era, it's primarily cheap entertaiment, the absolute priority being that it was made within budget to a strict deadline.
Dave O'Brien is no William Powell or George Sanders but he's as solid as ever as a theatre critic-cum-amateur detective unravelling who dunnit.

They missed an opportunity for a good story line with Mrs. Buchannan and Claudia. That issue never gets mentioned more than once. Would have been a better ending.....
