Inscription in ink on front free endpaper verso: "with Sturt's plates -- (scarce) ... Herman Hugo, author of Pia Desideria, was a learned Jesuit born at Brussels in 1588. It was first published in 1632, [?] & upniled[?] by Elzevir in 32mo. -- Hugo died in 1639. Charles borrowed his Emblems from this book & marred them in the borrowing ..."
Bound in re-backed full calf with the initials "D.H." gilt-tooled at center of front and rear boards
