Title of my review has nothing to do with the sound quality, sound quality—that as another reviewer so eloquently stated—sounds like it was made in an indoor theatre or something and not the notoriously windy and difficult to dial in Jones Beach.
Yeah, this shit is filthy, PEAK ERA QUINTET, with a fucking Led Zeppelin nod before they return to the final verse (what Deadhead doesn’t like the journey back to Stephen’s finale? Like, anyone ever played almost).
I love hearing Phil play with this stunningly-underrated-in-the-grand-scheme-of-rock-and roll-history-lineup, of course; but as I’ve grown older and truly started to understand what this particular lineup meant not just to me but to so many others who saw just a show, multiple shows, multi shows a tour and even either close to or just straight up whole tours, and how it brought back the touring spirit and circus of the GD while bringing a completely Jerry tone-less sound that was utterly unique to the history of what the bassist had already accomplished and that collective sound got dropped and was done with stunning regularity and overwhelming psychedelia and power, I AM SO FUCKING PAST WHATEVER PEAK GRATEFUL IS. Which leads me remark on one aspect, the notion that Phil KNEW the POWER, GLORY and the QUALITY of this lineup was on par with some the best GD at times, but also other Big Name, LOUD and ICONIC acts…like CREAM, Blind Faith and as shown here, even Zeppelin. They make that drop into Zep sound so easy and almost like an afterthought before heading back to the finale of Stephen. I never saw Jerry but I was a Dead freak from like 14
on with no GD it wasnt such a bad thing to have to see the Quintet as some of my first and most formidable concert experiences. First Quintet tour started in October 2000 in BURLINGTON…in my home state. We got a bottle and the rest is history. I’ll start reviewing other shows but I wanted all that as a prelude to giving the man who brought this recording to your ears, Taper Chris.
Chris, probably don’t remember me but this is Joe D. We had many mutual friends at one point. Had a rough go of it myself for a loooong minute but when I saw your name as a taper on here, memories came flooding back. I hope this alerts you to a review. This, among many of your other efforts, is FUCKING PRISTINE. So much love and light and I hope this message finds you and it finds you well.
That’s my review. Chris might think me a touch fanciful due to my noob stats compared to his (he saw and probably taped absurdly Lysergic drenched Jerry GD) but in the end I hope he’ll understand my enthusiasm here. Be well…
