The first set was ass kicking. Even the Gone Wandering was fun. Two seconds into the set closer, Dancin, you could tell the band was tipping their hats for Obama's pre-election dance. Great Brown Eyed Women.
Then came Warren, who, as my friend said at the time, really screwed things up old school. Passenger was a gutsy opener but it died on the table. The lugubrious Scarlet made me doubt whatever was good about myself (a joke). It seemed like the other guitarists were laying back for Warren, who was making sour faces the whole time, and otherwise choking when he took a lead.
The She Said She Said was great but Warren pours that right out of a can (I loved his version with the Dead in 2003-4, and this one is very good).
Campbell laid down a fine lead on Fire but the band just didn't seem to be jelling. They got a good groove going during Viola. For both Haynes' weepers, the Death and Stella, I was conscious of having to wait for the good parts, which weren't really that strong when he got around to them. I had a great time at this show, but the trajectory of set 1 shot far higher than set 2 delivered.

Subject: Tomato Head from Boulder?
Subject: Tomato Head from Boulder?
I was at this show with Rick Doerr, who had a roommate in Boulder who was also a Dead Head (awesome 1983 tape from Red Rocks btw). We're goofing out that Tomato Head was in the house with some Mics (as in Microphone, not Micrograms) the same night!
Death Don't Have No Mercy with Warren Haynes was very soulful - reminded me of Jerry covering it.
It was good to hear Megawatt again, laying down the foundation for some six stringers.

Subject: Great first set
Subject: Great first set
First set is very good, all 1971 Dead and very upbeat. A interesting jam before BE women, which is somewhat like a 1982 Throwing Stones, now that would be fun to hear. Second set has it's moments but not as consistent as first. Death Don't is a must listen. Stella as an encore is very sweet. Excellent quality recording too.
