Taper Notes:
This entry in the BARN series (BARN97) took me a LOT longer gthan I expected. The other Radiators shows I posted recently were quick and easy for me to process and post. Well, this show turned out to be quite the opposite. Some of the problems I had to deal with: one person CONSTANTLY clapping right into my right mic during Chainsaw Massacre; whistlers; screamers; REALLY excited people really near my mics. Oh and I thought I was finally done with this a few weeks ago, but NO -- the encore had somehow transferred with 8 dropouts in it -- though I went back to the master and got a clean play of the encore on a different DAT player. Oh well, it took me days and days to get this all cleaned up (and there was a little thing called Gathering Of The Vibes that kept me busy for the last few weeks), but here it is, my 3rd of a 3 part tribute to the demise of The Radiators.
Let's talk about why I chose this show in particular. To start with, this was a semi-private gig held at the TINY (for the band at time) Manny's Carwash. If I had to guess, they could hold max 300 people in this place, and their typical NYC gig was a multi-night stand at the approximately 1000 capacity Irving Plaza. So to start off, this was a super-intimate show in a tiny and good sounding venue owned by a pair Fishheads, the Winters brothers. The band obviously loved playing here, as they played a whole series of nights for the closing of this venue just a year later.
Beyond that, one look at this setlist may elicit a chorus of "Huh?"s from even the greasiest Fishhead. This show is chock full of rarities -- songs played for their first time, songs revived after not playing them for years, songs that (according to the Ancient Furnace website) were played less than 5 or 10 known times over the course of the band's entire career....and of course some killer covers and a few more typical Radiators songs (if you're going to slip in some typical Rads songs, they might as well be stuff like "Hardcore" and "Chainsaw Massacre"!). A few personal favorites from this show include "Out On The Rolling Sea", "Crazy Mixed Up World", "Blind Crippled And Crazy" (with some awesome guitar interplay), "Ode To Billy Joe", "Glad All Over", "Bom-Bom-Du-Dao", "Ling Ting Tong", the aforementioned "Hardcore" (which could be the best Radiators song ever), an over-the-top "Dancin' In The Streets", and the deep Beatles cut "I'll Cry Instead".
I, having only seen them a few times at this point (though I'd been listening to them for more than 10 years) had no clue how rare most of the songs were then -- only that they were tunes I hadn't heard before
This is the band at its most off-the-cuff loosest, throw-caution-to-the-wind self, but there are no trainwrecks or embarrassments, just great (and rare) music. This concludes my mini Radiators tribute in the BARN series. There may be lots more eventually.
Enjoy!
Scott
