This was my first of many, many Ratdog shows attended. This was the first summer of the Furthur Festivals and this day was awsome--definitely what us newbie Heads (17 years old) needed after getting only a taste of the real Dead experience in the last years prior. Lots of fun, with plenty of vending inside the venue grounds and out in the lot. The entire scene was chill, spacious, and a nice sunny day.
Los Lobos was insanely good mid-day. Killer version of "Bertha" by the way.
Ratdog and Bobby was why I was there though. This is early, blues dog folks, just before they started expanding their Dead catalog. So lots of the tunes were gritty and complented well with Matt Kelly's blues harp and singing. "Rider" is much more uptempo and has a 1800s saloon quality to it. Johnny Johnson was with the band and "Tanqueray" was his moment, just as the sun dipped and it got dark. Nice.
Overall this was a really satisfying show. "Rooster" ripped, "Easy Answers" was cool, "Weight" and "Low Spark" were very welcome, as was "Around x 2."
Sound quality is pretty decent on this one. Average aud, but Johnnie's piano playing really sparkles clearly on this recording. It's just great to have these 10+ year-old Ratdog gems posted, when the band was completely different than today's version--not necessarily better, but different
:)
