There comes a time in the course of battle when a participant casts his fate to the gods of war, and carries on without question, the task at hand. Living, dying, right or wrong, can be contemplated later. The spirit of the bayonet takes over and carries the youth through the crucible of battle to emerge a short time later several ages older.
Stephen Cranes classic novel gives us a glimpse into the mind of a young soldier as he passes through the experience he will never be able to forget, and possibly awaken him from his slumber in a sweat and panic for years to come.
Narrated by Mike Vendetti, Purple Heart, November 1965 (Summary by Mike Vendetti)

How Crane can take you through the mental anguish of the youths' struggle for equipoise only to loose it from innocent statements by soldiers at the campfire.. Crane lets us watch as the youth's mind writhes in anguish, in self-deception with attempts by manufactured ledgermain and guile
to escape his loathing self recrimination from the wrong choice. In an instant this reader's position of empathy is changed to outrage at Fleming's possible liberation from atonement.
Crane knows the ways of the mind: the conflict caused by shame, self betrayal compromise and corruption.
Wonderful prose. Fantastic novel.
Additionally, Mike Vendetti's masterful narration brings Crane's novel to a professional level deserving kudos and a standing ovation from all listeners.
