Another Gem... Pristine soundboard, and these boys deliver the goods. 5 Stars without question on quality and performance, especially Disc 2. Stellar versions of The Hunting Song, Black Bear, & Head.

Subject: Great show, Great run
Subject: Great show, Great run
I wasn't at these Cali shows, but I find that all 5 work well as a unit. Probably the best run of shows by these guys I've d/l'ed. Many prefer the Moe's Alley show, but I'm partial to this guest-free performance. First set highlights include the LWTG opener, which sets the mood, Butterfly and the Tree, featuring unreal rythm section work, especially thunderous bull fiddle from Grubb, and Old Man and the Land- Acoustic reggae, anyone?
The second set is where the real fun begins. Any Road is great, even though I'm not a big fan of this tune (don't hate me). Buddha, as always, rules. This and 7 Story Mtn. are the 2 songs that made me fall for this band. This version is solid, even though Andy isn't as strong as usual on the ever-so-crucial flute break in the beginning. The juxtaposition of Elko -> Hunting Song is odd but pleasing. Strange to hear RRE's trademark party tune segue into one of their most existentially shocking numbers (probably the best song written about killing stuff, EVER). Weird, but it works. Black Bear is really great, its slow jam reminiscent of the GD's Dark Star makes me wish it lasted for a good 30 min. However, that journey is cut short (for my tastes) and after a nice combo of Head (big jam), Storms (emotional set-closer) and FOTM (bluegrass/rocker encore) we are dropped from headphone bliss into living-room reality. Great show, I highly reccomend it along with the other April Cali shows.

A hot night...you can't find much wrong with this show. The sound quality couldn't be better and the performance is just about as tight as you can find.
