First Time Played: Steampowered Aeroplane (John Hartford cover).
A little history (for those who care):
This set was the second of three that SCI played at their first (and only to date) Merlefest. It was played at about 1PM during a pouring rainstorm. It didn't seem to stop the action and to this date remains probably the single best set of SCI I've had the honor to witness.
This DSBD surfaced a little while back. Merlefest is a notoriously non-taping festival, to the extent that when JonO extended a patch at the Main Stage on 4/27, festival authorities made him pull it back. It is essentially flawless, aside from a few spots of static here and there which are minor, but should be noted. I would assume they are related to the miserable weather that was happening.
For the transfer, I ran the Clipped Peak Restoration tool in Soundforge to remove some of areas where my tape was overblown. In addition, the first two minutes of the show were balanced from a level standpoint with how the rest of the show sounds. I hope you enjoy the results of the work and hope this set brings you as much enjoyment as it has brought me.

Subject: Such a great show
Subject: incredible Newgrass! this one smokes! great sound!
I remember, and I know Sam remembers when things were really starting to get interesting in the early 70s. Sam and the boys broke away from the Bluegrass Alliance, and formed the Newgrass Revival. Those boys put Newgrass music on the map. I saw them dozens of times in Louisville and at festivals. Then the "Muleskinner" album came out, and put newgrass music over the top. If only Clarence White was still playing guitar. The Grateful Dead perfected their famous "wall of sound". The Seldom Scene, Tony Rice, David Grisman. The rest is history.
Now we have it all, here on the LMA. I like to look at the big picture. Sam is like the Dead. So is SCI and their audiences, even though I don't know them. These folks are outstanding human beings, as well as fascinating musicians. And for this, we love them. What would they do with their music without us... and visa-versa? This is how it ought to be.
And Sam, I love how you immortalize John Hartford. You always have. Thanks so much everyone. Great job, Jimbo! This set epitomizes the best of modern Newgrass music, SCI, and Sam Bush. Make sure you download all the shns. One of the best kept secrets on the LMA! This set is historic. Btw, Sam Bush and Jerry Garcia wrote the "text book" on this stuff, when it comes to pure energy and sweet music.

Subject: poor Qualitease
Subject: sci is sick!!!
Subject: what is SCI w/out Sam Bush?
The sound quality was excellent but I do not recommend this band to anyone looking for burning bluegrass or cool jazz.
