Subject: A Tale of two bands.
So it is understandable to have a show fall a little flat after such a great one the night before, however only the first set of this show does that. This show is ALL ABOUT the 2nd set.
'Indian Creek' is a good opener and outside of a copule of minor flubs by Billy in the intro, it is actually wellplayed. A solid start, surely to get the crowd up and dancing. This ends quickly though.
Now 'Open Wide' isn't bad, it is just played very flatly, and the jam goes nowhere...and it takes a long time not to get there. There isn't really a 'jam' in between this and "R'n'Z", it is some decent Travis percussion that just leads to another un-inspired intro to 'Rhum'. It is solidly played, but I have heard so many with more energy, that this just does nothing for me.
'Up The Canyon', brings a little bit of the excitement back to the set, but it is a short little jaunt. 'Turn This Around' is well played, but nothing really sticks out. After listening to the night before's show...this just kinda sits there.
'Voodoo Chile' is a cool take on the Hendrix song and starts out great, but it lags a little in the middle. I like the accordian work on it. It seems, having not been there, that they might have been just trying to hang on a little to this so the kid would be painting to this song a little longer. Definitely good, but could have had a little more direction.
'Reastless Wind' is my highlight of the 1st set, and really seems to wake the band up. Nice jam and the energy is finally back in the music. Overall, a below avg 1st set for this tour.
The Highlight of the NIGHT starts off the 2nd set, 'Blackberry Blossom' is huge, majestic, fantastic...go grab a thesaurus, you get the picture. It really seems that a different band took the stage at the end of set I, and then came out for set II guns a-blazin'! If for nothing else, grab this show for the 'BB'!!!
Pickin' right up where they left off, the boys bring home a fantastic, Keller-less 'Best Feeling'. Very well played and perfectly sung, it is all around great. The jam out of it SOARS with alot of electric mando and some nice organ by Kyle. There is ALOT to listen to for this 5-6 minutes and as it slows and morphs to 'Face', the band really seems to be just taking a breather before starting out again. Kyle leads the charge back out with a nice fill on piano as it gets hectic again. Picture the Wicked Witch outside the window yelling about your little dog "Toto", catch my drift. I love the segue into 'I've Just Seen a Face', seriously not the same band that opened this show. Fantasic energy in this version with Kyle and esp Billy leading the way! Excellent segment.
'Driftin' Away' is a gorgeous song , and all menbers really play with heartfelt emotion. A good call for this song, nice little breather after the craziness. The thing is it is played with feeling so although slower, still much better than the 1st set.
Nothing much to 'Want', never really a song I got into. Decent Kang work, but they could have just went right to the Rollover in my eyes and nothing would have been missed. The one bright side to this song is at the end the funk is a interesting end.
After a little tuning, 'Rollover' begins what is the obvious highlight behind the 'Blossom'. I always loved this song, and this sandwich with 'Tom Thumb's' is an excellent example of what this could do to an otherwise avg show. After the verses, Kang lights out on a nice airy jazz exploration with the rest of the band really tight in the pocket. Travis signals a build and the tension mounts, albeit briefly to the middle of 'Rollover'. They are being very patient with this one and everything is slowly sliding its way up. As they leave the theme behind it gets dark and psychedelic, lots of backwards sounds, very eerie. This is unsettling music that I am sure was rattling some peoples psyche. It stumbles a little as the crowd was ready for an explosion and it just kinda stagnates just outside the realm of electronica. It doesn't seem like anyone wanted to take the lead, as it spaces out, this 3-4 minutes is the only real downtime to this sandwich. 'Tom Thumb's' was always a treat and this is no different, and it was a good call at this time of the jam, the crowd was itchin' for some action. They toy with 'Swingtown' as they enter back into 'Rollover', key word is toy...this isn't note for note stuff here. Kyle jumps all over the funk here, but Keith isn't as there as he was the night before as far as the mix goes, so it isn't as impressive. Solid ending to a good 'Rollover' sandwich. Always loved when they would hit back to the chorus.
'Rollin'...' is a great encore for this evening, since the 'Rollover' didn't seem rushed and they really tear this version up too.
Overall, an avg show for the tour, all due to the strength of the 2nd set. I give it a 3.5, but bc of the no 1/2 stars it has to be a 3.

Subject: Blackberry Bliss
Out of hundreds of shows I own, this one is on my weekly rotation for the amazing Blackberry Bliss inside. What a soul-full jam it is, worthy of a listen again and again and again. It's the best rendition I've heard. And the rest of the show is quite lovely, too. I was actually at this show. The crowd was really sweet, and the vibe was fabulous. And somehow the music actually seems even better on CD. Strange, but very, very good!

This show sounds fabulous. Thanks for all of the hard work everyone does to get these shows to us. I for one and I am sure many others are very grateful. The Rollover from this show is not too Shabby either.

Check out the Blackberry Blossom from this show. This rendition really moves. Gotta love the 2000 SBD's, thank Jeff Pote for uploading this one!

* Noah Kaplan created an improvised painting of Jimi Hendrix as tune was being played. Reported to have been pretty cool!
^ with brief Swingtown (Steve Miller Band) jam.
