A series of cross sections based on outcrops and well records(plates 1 through 7) was used to correlate lower Chesterian strata (Ste. Genevieve Limestone through Glen Dean Limestone) of the Illinois Basin. Eleven depositional sequences, bonded by regional unconformities, were identified from this work. Sequence stratigraphy enables a better understanding of the distribution and geometry of thin units within the Chesterian, including oil and gas reservoir facies, and it also provides a framework for future regional and site-specific studies
