I was at this show, and Smokestack rocked my shit out.
I think some folks forget that musicians such as these, are the last true alchemists. They take components and build off of what they have created, until something special has come about. But in order to understand that certain something, one must be able to cling onto every reaction, and understand it until it has fully evolved. One must forget about the bullshit which envelopes our ever days lives, to get past that confusion just listen to the music play - if you can.
This was a fine night for music.

Shot dead by the soldier. I just listened to this set on headphones and thought the levels and everything else were great. Its a Char heavy set and Im a little pissed I didn't make the drive up to flint 1 to see the show. I say rock on! Bring out the next show!
As for the other stuff, I understand that people don't like bands to play covers. Their heroes like the Grateful Dead, Phish, SCI, moe. or any number of other talented and commercially successful, national acts would never stoop to such tom foolery to give their audience a unique take on a song. However I am a fan of Paul Simon and in my opinion they do a nice version of Kodachrome in this set, and I don't know anyone else who performs skunk funk. It's a fabulous Becker Brothers cover, which brings tons of energy and, although I am unfamiliar with the original, I love when the stack plays it. If you can find another bass player that has the balls to do Jacos masterpiece Teen Town I say bring it on. Also, the Skunk Funk > Teen Town > Skunk Funk sequence is something that Jacob brang to the table when he joined the band. Knowing Jacob's attention to detail and tendencies to be a perfectionist, I would doubt he would encourage the continual performance of these songs if he didn't think it was paying homage to several of his heroes by playing it. However, I am not a musician, the only thing I can play is my stereo, so take my opinion for what it is, the opinion of a fan of music. I live here in lowly Toledo, Ohio, and every so often I am able to see this lovely band in a small venue where they undoubtedly rock the socks off anyone in attendance. Phils, and to a lesser extent, my efforts are to let other people share in that experience.
And to the Rock & Roll Martyr- where is that written, Phil's not in the band, he's an archivist. I'd have to say you're just pissed because you can be under the cloak of anonymous screen names, like aswype for example.

Nice job John! This show sounds perfect IMO.
I wish I had made it to Lexington for this show as the set list included many of my favorites.
The venue sounds awesome- the perfect amount of reverb, not boomy, perfect!
I highly recomend this show to any fan.
Haters make me laugh

I dont think this is all too bad maybe par for the world of cover bands but after reading this thread I have one big question Will the sound man hit me over the head with his mic if I don't say nice things? or maybe he'll give the grateful dead a bad review if I say the wrong thing (if I'm lucky)

bad covers - mediocre sound - not much here to get excited about...
except the threats from the band if you happen to make a review such as the one above:
Regarding the Little Feat show of 9-25-94 which I reviewed, this is what Phil has to say, which sounds more like a threat than a review:

if you can't say something nice....then come over here and i'll #$%# you up punk!!"
I see, so I can't have an opinion without you trashing some other part of the Live Music Archive to post your threat. Nice, Phil.
