Taper notes:
Continuing my New Orleans Jazzfest appreciation series with BARN48 -- another oldie but goodie, one of my other longtime favorite bands, Soulive, from pretty early in their career, playing a super late night show at the tiny House Of Blues Parish room. This one is LONG and jammy. Jazz guitarist Mark Whitfield and frequent guest Sam Kininger sit in for some significant portions of the show. In addition to originals from their early repetoire, we get lots of nice covers -- Stevie Wonder: Jesus Childern Of America, 2 Hendrix jams -- Who Knows & Voodoo Child, War: The World Is A Ghetto, The Isley Brothers: It's your Thing, Jame's Brown: Soul Power, and Stevie Ray Vaughan: Lenny. That's a lot more covers than the typical Soulive show, but with great songs like these, who cares? :-)
I got there early and Pete Costello already had his rig set up hanging over the band onstage, but he took his Schoeps down and replaced them with mine, as the omni pattern on my Neumanns is really well suited for a situation like this. You can really hear the stereo placement of band members on stage -- Alan on the left, Neil on the right, Kraz in the middle. It also means that the stage banter is only represented by what was coming out of the stage monitors which wasn't too loud, but I've tried to raise the volume a bit when Alan is speaking so you all can hear it better.
I'm not exactly sure why the end of Turn It Out is missing on my tape. Peter's tape probably cut just before the end of the show, so that's all we have.
Something to note -- my original setlist for this show listed a "Bridges To Bama" jam in the middle of "Jesus Children", a "Rudy's Way" in the middle of "It's Your Thing", and "Stakes Is High" between "Cannonball" and "Reunion". I think those must have been mistakes as I'm not hearing evidence of those songs.....
Enjoy!
Scott

Subject: My best Soulive show of May 2001
I honestly don't remember this show at all, except for one key moment, when World Is A Ghetto was dedicated to me. I had been waiting for them to cover this live ever since I started following and recording them in 1999.
It was a great show. Scott describes it well.
I'm posting since I noticed Scott and Pete's Nuemann recording was cut. So after many years, I'm officially posting my first time to etree.
Here's an uncut version from my Schoeps rig I ran on stage.

The title of this post is fitting, in that it was proabably my best Soulive show so far. They really broke out in 2001, and the hightlight for me was 2001-09-01 late night at the Blue Note in Chicago, a private show. I will try to post that soon.
