Subject: This is the current lineup of Ancient Harmony
Before Hal Month (keys) had officially left the band. Therefore the trio's performance that night was assigned a different name by the archivist who decided to label this recording as a performance of the Shell Stamps Band so as to differentiate it from what would've been considered a performance of all the members of Ancient Harmony at that time. In light of Hal's eventual departure, one may now wish to refer to this as an Ancient Harmony perfomance for the sake of convenience and for the essential accuracy that as it turns out Hal had already performed his final gig with the band.
The acoustic set featured mainly covers in contrast to what most electric Ancient Harmony performances in recent years which generally contained anywhere from almost all original material up to approximately 40% covers at shows where the majority of the listeners were unfamiliar with their original material. Despite the abundance of covers, I would reccomend this show to all fans of Ancient Harmony. The novelty of this being the first acoustic performance recording of theirs to circulate in over 3 years is one reason. The sheer quality of the performance is another. The absence of Hal on keys as a soloist really opens it up for Shell to take more solos on guitar, making Shell Stamps Band an apt name for this performance. Each solo of Shell's having to outdo the previous one led to some of the most intense and experimental playing I've witnessed from him to date, especially during the electric set. Hal's departure was felt to be sure, but it opened things up quite a bit for the remaining members of the band to take their individual performances to new heights. Steve's only lead vocal, on Paul Simon's Senorita With a Necklace really demonstrates how far he has come as a singer having only sung lead for the first time less than 4 months prior to this performance. It's amazing that with such a great voice that he never stepped up to the mic sooner. The electric set featured 3 long jammed out covers to start things off, then finished off with 3 originals including the first known recording of drummer Jay Hoots' newest song Bump which had been performed once prior at a show that went unrecorded. Following Bump to close out the set was a Time Will Tell->Youngboy that was 36 minutes of pure bliss.
