Review by Cory Ferber
SOUND QUALITY: Excellent to perfect. This is a near flawless recording from the Regency Center in San Francisco, the same venue where the band has played NYE in 02 and 03. This front of board recording captures the sound of room perfectly including the balanced mix coming out of the speakers. You can hear all the little details on this one including the great stereo sound effects. This show was recorded by a long time band archivist Bob Wiely who has perfected the art of capturing STS9 live.
REVIEW: DOWNLOAD THIS SHOW!
This is an epic 3 set show that took place on a Thursday night, where most of crowd seemed to be tired from the start. The Tribe seeded on this emotion by playing an overall mellow and ambient flowing show across all songs. There is no shortage of intricate group jamming on the slow songs
The first overwhelming aspect of this show is the band pulls out 25 tracks! This show is worth downloading for this reason alone. A number of the bands tracks that were developed under the Tzolkin performances are presented here, along with a number of songs debuted in the summer of 2003. Are you bad with song names? Here is a good place to crystallize 25 of them!
The show opens with a sample from Live At Home, and then moves into 2 new songs I was not familiar with at the time. The third song was CRYSTAL INSTRUMENT; a song debuted at the Golden Gate Park Tzolkin performance, and still relatively un-played by the band. This was a great way to open the show! It was an incredible great experience to be with a bunch of hardcore fans who were all confused because we didnt know the songs. When they finally pull out RAMONE & EMIGLIO, the place is ready to explode. This was the perfect way to start a 3 set show!
The rest of the show is packed with most of my favorite songs I like to hear live by the band including ASAA, MISCHIEF, GROW, BARAKA, HUBBLE, and BREATHE IN. There is also a notable stand alone EVASIVE, a somewhat rare occurrence these days. The encore is a nice rendition of LIFES SWEET BREATH, a beautiful way to close down the 3 set show and send everyone off into the foggy San Francisco night.
For this show, we were in the front row of the left side balcony overlooking the keyboards with a nice angle on the drums. Its not very often that STS9 play a venues with a balcony so we wanted to take advantage of this and view the show from a different location.
