Subject: Indie-folk brillance
I came across the Snot Patties one day after I typed in the name Jandek in the Internet Archive search box, purely in the hope that I could find a band or singer influenced by the great Texan. I thought I might something interesting, but I never thought I would find something as great as this. The Snot Patties hardly sound like Jandek at all, but they do follow a wonderful tradition of lofi indie folk where gorgeous melodies and intelligent and original lyrics shine through the minimal production like, um, you know, something shiny shining through something else that happens to be a little murky.

So, the songs: The Apti-Toad is a wonderful opener, with a gloriously infectious melody and lyrics that filter a childlike fairytale through the knowingness of early adulthood. In a fairer world it would be widely regarded as an indie-folk pop classic.

Down to the Grape is catchy and enjoyable rave-up, while Drive to the Moon is, without exaggeration, magnificent; a song with a Neutral Milk Hotel influence that Jeff Magnum himself would be proud to write. I love the lyrics to this one as they are wonderfully imaginative while still rooted in the mechanics of everyday human emotions, which quite an impressive feat to accomplish.

Another stand out for me is Experience Kills You, with its wonderfully emotive strumming and melancholy lyrics. Also impressive is the funny tale of the Hollow Dog (love the whistling!), the beautiful melodicism of Waiting for the World and also Thinking Too Hard, with its immortal opening lines about King Arthur once eating his own weight in crackers!

Not every single song hits the mark, though, as Fear of Prawns and Wornout Eyes feel rather underwritten and lacking in melody, but there are enough stellar songs on here that prove the brilliance of the Snot Patties.

This band is an inspiration to me. I love the intelligence, creativity, humor of their lyrics, the beautiful homespun melodies and the fact that they can do more with 4 or 5 chords than many band can do with 20. God bless the Snot Patties.
