Formed in 1985 by the merging of the Philadelphia College of Art and the Philadelphia College of the Performing Arts, the University of the Arts in Philadelphia is the first and only university in the United States solely dedicated to higher education in the visual, performing and communication arts.

UArts predecessor institutions date back as far as 1876 and 1870 and include the Pennsylvania Museum and School of Industrial Art, Philadelphia College of Art, Philadelphia College of the Performing Arts, Philadelphia Musical Academy, Philadelphia Conservatory of Music, and Philadelphia Dance Academy.
