Subject: Goodbye Billy Lee
Subject: Goodbye Billy Lee
For the star of THE BISCUIT EATER and so many other films this was his final performance. Billy Lee is only now in recent years finally achieving recognition as one of the greatest child actors in American film. This is thanks both to the many people who have posted all of his films online but also because of the way Youtube can provide a higher profile than existed during an actor's actual career. This is a good realist film, compassionate without being maudlin, and not without a hard edge of social realism. A fine and final performance as Billy plays the long-suffering son of an alcoholic father he can never stop loving. Forget about the budgetary restraints; for many, the poverty row studios offered a freedom unknown to major studio efforts. Billy would go on to raise three fine children but sadly passed away unexpectedly from a heart attack age 60, in 1989. Rest in peace. This drama marked the end of an eight-year career that saw so many brilliant performance in drama and in comedy.

Okay, I'll admit it, I watched about a quarter of this saccharine movie and couldn't face any more. If you want to see what really happens to dogs in war, go to YouTube and search War Dogs of Vietnam. This semidocumentary, narrated, I think, by Charlie Sheen, used to be on a military website until the army decided they had beaten themselves up enough about their inhumanity to the dogs that saved so many lives, I guess.
The film's fairly degraded now but still watchable if you can stand to watch it all the way through. It's heartbreaking to see men crying over the dogs they handled 20 years in the past, dogs that died for them and their buddies or were abandoned in that hell hole by the US Army which refused to let them bring their dogs back home. Sheesh, I'm tearing up now remembering it. Anyhow, that's why this video gets no rating from me; it's just too far from the truth.

Aww Geeze! I thought it was a swell movie, pass the tissues. Ace "the Wonder Dog" is the real star.

Many years ago I saw this under a different title. It's one of Monogram's WWII propaganda treats and is interesting in that respect. But not interesting from any other angle.
