Subject: Good, but there's better
Wayne Hancock is one of my all-time favorites and I am delighted to come across his live music here in the Internet Archive! Wayne "the train" Hancock's music is pure Americana. He mixes country, rock and blues with jazz, swing, western and rockabilly to create something familiar yet original. This Texan's brilliant song writing skills match one of the most unique voices. His music tends to simultaneously sound vintage and innovative.

As for this 6-13-03 HiTone show, it's not the best. While the musical quality easily earns five stars, the sound quality is what drags the overall rating of this show down. While the notes for this show state that the microphones were "15 feet from center stage and suspended 8 feet from the floor," it sounds like the mics were in the back of the club and mounted on a table. While certain songs sound great, audience chit-chat is a significant distraction with others. Wayne plays some great songs like, "Miller, Jack, and Mad Dog," "Flatland Boogie" and the blues classic "Milk Cow Blues." The line-up features: 1) acoustic guitar, 2) upright (acoustic) bass and 3) electric guitar.


If you're a fan, you will want this show since live Wayne Hancock discs are virtually non-existent. For the casual listener, initially go for his two best Internet Archive shows: 4-8-04 at the Underground Tavern and 9-20-03 at the Continental Club. I look forward to finding additional Internet Archive shows by this Americana genius!
