Subject: Classic Big Wu
It's almost hard to find good Wu shows on the archive by rating, as almost any show that has a review was given four or five stars. It must be said, Big Wu fans always did have a hard time parsing out the really good stuff from the strictly mediocre (and sometimes even the crap). The Big Wu may well have been the jamband scene's most inconsistent band, in terms of live performance. At least the most inconsistent to have reached a sort of mid-tier level of acclaim. That being said, this show represents not only the best of the Big Wu, but also everything that was (is?) great about the regional jamband scene --- talented bands making great original music at beloved venues in front of committed crowds.
Start to finish, this show impresses. Listening to the second set --- particularly everything from Kensington through the closer --- I would have put this band toe-to-toe with any of the biggies. These late 2001 shows are the Big Wu at the pinnacle of their creative energy and probably of their fan devotion too, and the dynamic is palpable. They'd go on to write another album or more's worth of good songs, they'd play a few more good shows in 2002 before Jason left the band, and they'd pull off a winner here and there as a four-piece for the next five years...but the second half of 2001 right through NYE was, in my mind, when this band was at the top of their game. And this is one of the very strongest of those shows.
Seriously, I could listen to the "Kensington" all day long. I've come to realize that the Big Wu's greatest strength as a jamband was probably in the studio, but when they were on, they were on. Only wish you could stream this show, but it's definitely worth the download.
