Subject: One Hell of A Show!!!
Subject: One Hell of A Show!!!
I was at this show and am so glad I was able to get such a great recording from it. The energy in the nokia was insane. These guys were jamming and then fishman came out, brought to even a higher level. One of the best shows of the year for me, perfect combination of great music, chill scene and people just having some fun getting funky.
This was what I wrote on my blog reviewing the show the day afterwards...
The night was filled with twangy tasty jams that simply had me living with nothing but smiles.
I feel like I am getting deja vu, two more firsts for me again. I have never seen Yonder Mountain String Band outside of festival on their own or been to the Nokia Theater. I am glad I ventured into NY since both offered a great evening. I walked out of the show with smile from ear to ear and such a positive energy that simply isn't available at most shows.
The venue is a general admission with lots of room to move around. The venue hosts two dance floors and a seating area to the rear in a amphitheatre style. You can get really close to the band on the side sections that sit several feet above the lower dance floor. I could not get up to the upstairs since it was reserved for VIP patrons. Every corner you turn there is a bar, I think there is probably 10 bars in the entire venue. Waitresses walk around selling beer on their LED lite serving trays, giving you an opportunity to see the show without missing a beat to get drinks. I did not get the prices on drinks since it was a sober night for me. The security guards were really nice, most laughing and smiling along with you. They were only allowing 5 people out at a time to smoke cigarettes since they did not want to flood the streets with patrons during intermission, everyone stared smoking inside as a result. There was a pungent smell of skunkiness to the air so people were getting away smoking inside, however, they must have been very discreet since there were no first hand sightings. Overall I would give the venue a 4 out of 5 stars, major drawback is they make you check your bag in for $3.00 once you enter the venue. This is a bummer for guys like me trying to make a buck selling goods from my bag.
The music was raw and offered an amazing energy that you simply can't find at every show. I was introduce to bluegrass like many of have been, through the acoustic styles of Garcia and Grisman. These guys are similar but different at the same time. There was such a positive tone to music that you could not help but smile and dance you ass off. Adam was laying down some sick rhythms with his dreadnought, Dave picked the banjo like there was no tomorrow, Ben laid down some sick bass runs and Jeff played that mandolin like no other player I have heard before (Well maybe Kang from SCI offers some competition). Fishman came out on drums two songs before intermission and played the entire second set with the band. The band offered positive words towards Fishman and his upcoming tour next spring, you know the one where I am going to win the lottery for all three nights in March. He added a richer dimension to an already rocking band, the sound became much more fuller with the addition of the deep back beat. Overall, I would give the band 6 out of 5 stars. They rocked me, I danced the entire night sharing some great energy with some good people and had a great time.
I was talking with a couple of real nice people during the show who were much more familiar with the band than me. I asked Sarah, from RI, how this show ranked in comparison to some of their other shows. Standing at about 5'3", she replied by raising her arm to about 6', as far as she could reach on her tippy toes. She was chilling with her boyfriend and his younger brother. Hopefully we will get to meet again on Monday at the Dead show. I found a real nice pocket of energy on the second level dance floor where I settled into for most of night. I am working on getting some coffee in me after only 4 hours sleep, I will put up the setlist once I wake up and have some more energy later in the day. Thank you to everyone for sharing some great energy and good times.
