WHAT BAPTISTS BELIEVE

10.     REPENTANCE AND FAITH

We believe that repentance and faith are scriptural necessities and inseparable graces to

regeneration, whereby being deeply convinced of our guilt, danger, and helplessness, and of the

way of Salvation in Christ, (Mk 1:15; Acts 11:18; Eph 2:8; I Jn 5:1; Jn 16:8; Acts 2:37,38; Acts

16:30,31) we turn to God with unfringed contrition, confession, and suplication for mercy; at the

same time heartily receiving the Lord Jesus Christ as our Prophet, Priest and King and relying on

Him alone as the only and all sufficient Savior. (Lk 18:13; Jms 4:7-10; Rom 10:9-13;

Acts 3:22,23; Heb 1:8; Heb 3:1)

1- Repentance

A-     Defined -Repentance is a change of mind, or a conversion from sin to God.

1-Jesus said “Repent ye, and believe the gospel” Mk 1:15

2-Repentance is the relinquishment of any practice, from conviction that it has offended God. Repentance is a turning from sin and a turning to God (Acts 20:21)

3-Godly sorrow worketh repentance to salvation.  2Cor.7.

4-The prodigal son of Luke 15 certainly repented (change of heart, mind and will)

B-      Declared

1-Acts 17:30 God commands all men every where to repent (Lost, backslid, & church)

Acts 2:37,38  At Peters preaching, the hearers of the Word were convicted and felt:

1-They were guilty of sin against God

2-They were in danger of God’s judgement

3-They were totally helpless to change circumstances or condition

4-They acknowledged that Jesus is Lord

C-      Denied

Anyone who denies the message of Christ and will not repent will perish Lk 13:5

For all are sinners and come short of the glory of God and are in need of the Savior

2-   Faith

A-     Defined- That firm belief or confidence of God's testimony, and of the truth of the gospel,

and leads to an entire reliance on Christ for salvation. (Heb 11:1, Rom 10:17 )

B-      Declared

1-We turn to Him with contrition  (Publican of Luke 18:13)  (James 4:7-10)

2-We must make to Him our confession (Rom 10:9-13) (I John 1:9)

3-We must throw ourselves at His mercy (Again the publican of Luke 18:13)

4-We must place our faith in the merits of His work on the cross and resurrection

5-Faith honors God

C-      Denied

Anyone who can not come by faith to Christ is coming by works or some alternative

route. The Bible speaks clearly “For by grace are ye saved, through faith” Eph 2:8

There is only one way to come… that is come by faith. Jn 3:36, Heb 11:6

*Whatsoever is not of faith is sin, because doubting and faithlessness is unbelief.

3-      Acceptance

A-   Repentance qualifies a man for salvation, but it takes faith in Christ to acquire it

A-     We must rely only on Him as our Savior

1-When we come repenting of sin, by faith in Christ’s merit, we can be saved

2-He is all we need

B-      We must accept Him

1-As our Prophet (Acts 3:22,23) 2-As our Priest  (Heb 3:1) 3-As our King (Heb 1:8)

C-             4-Afterall, Jesus is Lord of Lords and King of Kings, and He is my Savior
