WHAT BAPTISTS BELIEVE
13. ETERNAL SECURITY AND PERSEVERANCE
We believe that every person that is truly saved (Rom 10:13) is eternally saved. We believe that
saved people have tests, temptations, a continual warfare with the flesh, world, sin and the devil
(I Pet 5:8; Gal 5:17; I Pet 2:11; I Jn 2:15-17) and may sin; (I Jn 2:1,2) that saved people
persevere, continue in the faith, and overcome by the Grace of God; (I Jn 5:4; I Jn 4:2-19) that
they are chastened and suffer loss of reward for disobedience (Eph 3:14-21; II Tim 4:6-8; Heb
12:3-11; I Cor 3:12-16) that they are rewarded for faithfulness in service; (I Cor 9:25; II Tim 4:8;
James 1:12; I Pet 5:4; Rev 2:10; Rev 3:11) that true partakers of Christ are kept by the power and
grace of God; (I Pet 1:5; I Cor 15:10; Eph 2:8; Phil 1:6; Rom 5:20) and have a divine guarantee
that they have eternal life and shall never perish. (Jn 3:15-18, 36; Jn 4:14; Jn 5:24; Jn 10:27-29).
Persevere means to pursue steadily, no matter what, and not give over or abandon, but continue
1. Saved People are Eternally Saved
Every person that is saved (Rom 10:13- Whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be
saved) is eternally saved (Jn 10:27-29 Jesus said he gave us eternal life and we shall never perish)
2. Saved People are in Spiritual Warfare
We are not promised a rose garden nor a bed of roses, but are in warfare
There is a continual warfare between the saved soul and body of flesh in the believer
There will be trials, tests, temptations, warfare with the flesh, world, sin and the devil
I Jn 2:15-17 Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world……..
I Pet 5:8 The devil as a roaring lion is seeking whom he may devour
Gal 5:17 The flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; these are contrary
I Pet 2:11 Abstain from fleshly lusts, which war against the soul
3. Saved People may falter and sin
Eternal Salvation is NOT a license to sin Rom 5:20b-6:2
But if & when we sin, we are convicted by His Spirit and we need forgiveness I Jn 1:9- I Jn 2:2
4. Saved People Persevere
We do not quit when we fail, but by faith and thru His forgiveness, march on to victory
I Jn 5:4 Who is he that overcometh the world, but he that believeth that Jesus is the Son of God ?
5. Saved People are Chastened for Disobedience
When we commit sin and continue in disobedience, God will chasten the believer
Heb 12:6-11 For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth
When we are chastened and still continue on we will suffer loss of reward I Cor 3:11-17
If we continue in disobedience, God could turn us over for a destruction of the flesh I Cor 5:5
6. Saved People are Rewarded for Faithfulness
We must serve God faithfully thru trials and life James 1:12
When we die, let us leave with no regret, but wholly following the Lord II Tim 4:6-8
For there shall be a judgment seat and we will be rewarded there II Cor 5:10
7. Saved people are a Kept People
By the Power of God I Pet 1:5 “kept” meaning a fixed position, guarded, unchangeable eternally
By the grace of God I Cor 15:10
8. Saved People Have Everlasting Life
I John 5:12 He that hath the Son hath life;
John 3:15-18, 36 John 4:14; John 5:24; John 10:28
