WHAT BAPTISTS BELIEVE

THE
LORD’S DAY
We believe that the first day of the week is the Lord’s Day (Rev 1:10; I Cor 16:2) that it was
established as a Christian institution for regular observance in the New Testament; that it
commemorates the resurrection of Christ from the dead and should be employed in exercise of
worship and spiritual devotion, both public and private, and by refraining from amusements, and
resting from secular employments, the only exception being
works of mercy and necessity. (
2:16,17; Acts 20:7; Luke 24:1; Jn 20:19; Matt 28:1,8,9; Mk 16:9; Luke 24:34; Ps 118:22; Acts
1:22; Acts 4:10-20; Heb 4:9).
1) The Sabbath
God rested on the 7th day, which is Saturday (Gen 2:1-3)
The Sabbath is acknowledged by most as a period of Sunset on Friday till sunset on Saturday
· He did not rest because of weariness but He ceased from activity as the work was complete
· Sabbath’s first mention (Ex 16:22-30) regarding manna
The Law of the Sabbath Ex 20:8-11 see also Deut 5:12-15 (Ex 16:29, 35:3, Num 15:32-36)
Pharisee’s added to God’s law many of their own observances making their ideas as God’ s law.
Christ is Lord of the Sabbath Matt 12:1-13 works of mercy & necessity as in I Sam 21:6-
Man was not made for the Sabbath, but Sabbath for the man (Mk 2:27,28)
Christ died according to scriptures, was buried & on the Sabbath was resting & dead (Matt28:1)
2) The Resurrection
Christ is the end of the Law (Rom 10:4) He came to fulfill the law (Matt 5:17)
Christ was Resurrected on the first day of the week (Matt 28:1, Mk 16:9, Lk 24:1, Jn 20:1)
· The first day of the week is Sunday, we commemorate his death and resurrection on Sunday
· Resurrection evening (Jn 20:19)
Under
the law we are dead, but under grace we live to see a new day (
Don’t live under legalistic rules and regulations, but live under the blessings of Christ
3) The Church
Since Christ was raised on the first day of the week, the church continues to meet on that day
Acts 20:7, I Cor 16:2 ( Breaking Bread, Preaching & Instruction, Holy Thought, Collections)
This is a day for reverence, reflection and rest. Not for gardening, amusement, pleasure or work.
· The Lord’s Day is the new day of worship for the church
John, on the Isle of Patmos, (Rev 1:10) and was in the Spirit on the Lord’s Day
