WHAT BAPTISTS BELIEVE
9. JUSTIFICATION AND RIGHTEOUSNESS
We believe that Justification and Righteousness are inseparably united in the Scripture; that
justification may be defined as the judicial act of God whereby He justly declares righteous, ones
who believe on the Lord Jesus Christ; that it is bestowed, not in consideration of any works of
righteousness which we have done, but solely by Grace through faith in the Redeemer’s Blood;
that the believing sinner is justified because Christ, having borne His sins on the cross, has been
“made unto Him righteousness”; (I Cor. 1:30) that the saved, justified sinner has, instead of
condemnation, peace and favor in the courts of God; and that justification secures for us every
spiritual
blessing that is needed for time and eternity.
(Jn. 1:16; Eph. 3:8; Acts13:39;
Rom. 5:9, 17, 19; Titus 3:5, 6; Rom. 4:4, 5; Rom.8:34 -38; Rom. 5:1- 3, 11; Matt. 6:23).
1- Justification
A- Merited in God’s saving grace-Rom 3:23All have sinned and come short of the glory of God
Eph 2:8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God: 9 not of works, lest any man should boast.
B- Motive and mercy of God’s justification- Acts 13:38,39 Be it known unto you therefore, men and brethren, that through this man is preached unto you the forgiveness of sins: and by him all that believe are justified from all things, from which ye could not be justified by the law of Moses.
C- Manner of God’s justification- Rom 3:24 Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus: Vs 28 Therefore we conclude that a man is justified by faith without the deeds of the law. (Justification is by faith in Christ)
D- Moment of God’s justification- Rom 5:1 Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ: (We have peace with God the moment of salvation)
2- Righteousness
A- Merited in God’s saving grace- Rom 3:10 There is none righteous no not one
II Cor 5:21 For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made
the righteousness of God in him.
Phil 3:9 And be found in him, not having mine own righteousness , which is of the law, but
that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith:
B- Motive and mercy in God’s righteousness- Titus 3:5 Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost;
C- Manner of God’s righteousness -Rom 3:22 Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe: for there is no difference:(Vs 24-26)
Rom 4:4 Now to him that worketh is the reward not reckoned of grace, but of debt. 5 But to him that worketh not, but believeth on him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness . (Righteousness is declared by God to one who by faith comes to Christ)
D- Moment of God’s righteousness -Rom 10:10 For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness ; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.
Rom 6:18 Being then made free from sin, ye became the servants of righteousness .
I Cor 1:30 But of him are ye in Christ Jesus, who of God is made unto us wisdom, and
righteousness , and sanctification, and redemption:
3- No Condemnation
A- We must conclude that Justification and Righteousness are inseparable
B- Rom 8:1 There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.
Rom 8:31-39 “It is God that justifieth”
