Pennington deals with the committee of finance;351 with Roots' assistance he describes one of the local instruments, a task performed by Everitt for another region.352 Everitt has also produced two exemplary' general analyses of particular regions in the years of disturbance,353 while Howell performs a similar service for a town caught in all the cross-currents of the time (including the Scots).354 Two new studies of Oliver Cromwell have not replaced the old masterpiece by Firth. Paul emphasizes the protector's re- ligion, while Ashley has recanted his earlier view which saw in Cromwell the prototype of twentieth-century dictators.355 He has also written some useful brief biographies of Oliver's comrades in arms.356 Trevor-Roper broke new ground in a 341 Hugh R.
