Wisconsin Entomological Society Volume 12, Number ~T Editor: . Mark H. Evans Fall, 1984 Editor's Notes : . , c Well! Fall is coming up fast. Can winter be far behind? Before too long, we temperate entomologists may begin to have a bit more time to try and figure out what we ve accomplished for the 1984 season. If you’ve experienced a summer anything like we have here in the Madison ’’butterfly lab, then you know you've accomplished a lot, even if you have felt too busy to figure out what all of it was yet. Our Society looks forward to our fall and winter meetings as a chance to renew old acquaintances, encourage new members, and stimulate each other with thoughts and ideas for the coming spring and summer season. Your Executive Council has met xo begin planning for upcoming events and meetings and I think it can be a good winter ahead, especially if you show your interest, support, and participation. One way you can participate is to think of things, and write down ideas, notes, experiences, or questions and send them to me for possible inclusion in your next Newsletter. This is your Newsletter, so please help to keep it stimulating and valuable to our membership as a sharing and communication tool. Also, please pay special attention to the following section "From your President" and please come to our meeting Tuesday. Mark H . Evans 240 Russell Labs. TTW Madison. Wi. 53706 From Your President : “ D u r i tig my several WES members great importance to tenure as President, I have spoken with on a series of subjects which I feel are of all of us: member participation in the Society, program content, and "direction" of the WES. These subjects are obviously of importance to the vitality of any organization and should certainly be mulled around by all of us i f we are to preserve the original intent of the WES as stated in Article IT of our Constitution: "Section 1: It shall be the purpose of this Society to promote the study of entomology in all its branches, especially as it applies to Wisconsin and the surrounding states; to facilitate and encourage the exchange of specimens and ideas by both professional and amateur entomologists, to publish periodicals and other occasional papers on entomology and related fields; to promote conservation in the field of Entomology, and to do that which shall promote the general purpose of this Society." To this end, the next meeting of our Society has been set aside for an open forum on the WES: what it has going for it, ad what its present and future needs are. Please try to join us, and bring along an idea or two! We'll also use the time to share any interesting or unusual insect finds from the past summer's collecting. I'd be happy to take a stab at any beetles you may be stumped on, and I'm sure other members could offer assistance on lepidoptera, Hymenoptera and perhaps other groups as well. We will have access to microscopes, so don't hesitate to bring along "small stuff!" More From the Pres ! As most of you should know if you've been reading your Newsletters, the WES has sort-of adopted (or been adopted by) the UW Milwaukee Field Station at Cedarburg Bog. For two summers now, we've had field collecting trips at the Cedarburg site, and several of us have toyed with the idea of making it a regular trip. This would be done in an effort to better identify the local insect fauna and, eventually, to create a useful teaching- research reference collection to be housed at the UWM Field Station. Jim Reinartz, the station's manager, has received us and our "pet project" most enthusiastically, and has been an excellent host to several of us over the course of the summer. Recently, Jim sent me a letter regarding the Field Station Bulletin, a portion of which reads as follows: "I am currently arranging the fall 1984 issue of the Bulletin and was wondering whether you or anyone in your group that you know of might have some notes to include on the Field Station insects. We are especially interested in articles concerning the local area. Please let me know whether you would consider writing an article or send me the names and addresses of anyone you think might like to contribute to the Bulletin." This could be an excellent vehicle for publication of notes or short studies on the entomofauna of Wisconsin. I definately plan to consider the Field Station Bulletin for a few projects I have underway; I hope you will too! Recent Publications of WES Members : Young, D.K. 1983. Field studies of cantharidin orientation by Neopyrochroa f labellata (Coleoptera: Pyrochroidae). Great Lakes Entomol. 1 7 ( 3 ) : 1 3 3 - 1 3 5 . (reprints available) Past Meetings : On Saturday, September 8, we held our first meeting of the fall at the Milwaukee Public Museum. Gordon Parris, an entomologist in the Museum, arranged to have Melinda Myers of the Milwaukee County University Extension Office and her husband, Julian Wesley of the Boerner Botanical Garden, speak on some of the common and some of the more interesting insect related problems that they have encountered in their care of parks as well as in their interactions with the public. The title of their talk was "Skeletonizers in your Closet." Before and after the meeting, refreshments of cheese, crackers, cider, and lemonade were served. Upcoming Meetings : Tuesday, 9 Oct., 7:30 P.M., 150 Russell Labs.: This meeting will be a discussion of present and future goals for our Society as well as meeting and special event formats and ideas for our Newsletter. In addition, everyone is invited to bring along some specimens to show, get help in identifying, or share anecdotes about . Tuesday, 13 Nov., 7:30 P.M., 150 Russell Labs.: This will be our second annual Photo Salon. Look through those slides from last summer and pick out about 5 that you'd be willing to share with the rest of us. If you don't have any photos don't worry. Just come and enjoy sights (and the refreshments!). Look for your meeting notice in the mail for more info. Classifieds : Wanted: Records of Wisconsin underwing moths (Noctuidae: Catocalinae) for proposed publication. Will identify any questionable specimens. All contributors will be acknowledged. Contact Les Ferge, 7119 Hubbard Ave., Middleton Wise. 53562. Wanted: Wish to exchange specimens of Wisconsin Coleoptera (larvae as well as adults). Actually, I should be happy to arrange exchange of beetles from other areas as well. While my research interests focus on the "heteromerous" families, I maintain a general collection of larval and adult Coleoptera and have a broad interest in the systematics and bionomics of all groups. Contact: Dan Young, Dept, of Entomology, UW Madison, Wi. 53706. Wanted: Records of Wisconsin (and other Great Lakes region) Erotylidae for eventual publication. At this point, I am primarily interested in adults and would be willing to provide speies level determinations for any unidentified material from this region. Data relative to fungal associations would be particularly useful. Contact: Dan Young, Dept, of Entomology, UW Madison, Wi . 53706. Membership List : Please look for your name in our following membership list and check for accuracy and spelling. If anything is incomplete or misspelled, please let me know. Also, we would like to keep track of our member's special interests so let me know if any thing should be added to our records. Thank you. Editor.
