Note the round of the luff. This would not be seen when the sail is set, as the lufi rope would conform to the curvature of the stay. The cloths are parallel to the leech and the foot. The diagonal band covers the seam joining the two parts, and strengthens the sail against the pull of the sheet. This diagonal method of making a sail is a better one than that of having all the cloths parallel to the leech, as the sail is stronger and keeps its shape better.
