tOAt> 377 Assigning Authorities.—The British authorities who assign load line marks are Lloyd's Register (LR.), British Corporation (B.C.) and the Board of Trade (B.T.). The initial letters of the assigning authority may be indicated by letters measuring about 4f inches by 3 inches marked alongside the disc and above the centre line. The assignment of load lines is conditional upon the ship being structurally efficient and upon the provision of effective protection to ship and crew. Fig. 17.—Load Lines for Steamships. A Certificate of Approval of the marking must be obtained from the Board of Trade. This must be framed and put up in some conspicuous part of the ship. The Penalty which an owner or master is liable to for non-compliance with these Regulations as contained in the Merchant Shipping Act, or for altering or defacing the marks, or tor overloading, shall be a fine act exceeding £100. o
