Stupas like this were geuerulJy erecLcd by Buddhists to exi-
shrme some relics of the Buddha. The emperor Asoka, the
Great adopted Buddhism. He was fond of Taxila where lie had
governed as a Prince. This p:reat atupa,—the DIxarmarajika
gtupa—was built in his time. It is one of the most remarkablQ
and outstanding monuments of Taxila.
