and cssa, essi and esse, may refer to persons, Animals or
things.

A subject pronoun is required: (a) when it is modified by
an adverb; (6) when it is in contrast with a noun or another
pronoun.
3. Ella ascolta. 1 ^r *. , , ,, *
. 1 > You listen (addressing one 'person).
Loro ascoliano. You listen (addressing more persons).
Ella or, more familiarly, Lei with the verb in the 3d person
singular, and Loro with the verb in the 3d person plural, are
the normal forms of direct address in modern Italian. Tu
and voi are used only in addressing very intimate persons,
children, and dependents.
