Charles Lamb was born on February 10, 1775 in London, where
ills father was clerk and confidential servant to Samuel Salt, a weal-
thy bencher of the Inner Temple* With the recommendation of his

Hospital, where he was educated for nearly seven years. At school
he was shy and reserved, and had to endure a great many hardships
