probably owned a marked copy This work and the mockery of the country
* gentleman * (such as Mr Stephen, Sogliardo, Sir Andrew Aguecheek) on
the stage seem to reflect a prevalent discussion on the ' new gentry * to which
Hamlet refers (* autumn 1601) in " By the Lord, Horatio, these three years
I have taken note of it , the age is grown so picked that the toe of the
peasant comes so near the heel of the courtier, he galls his kibe ' , see
especially Every Man out of His Humour, Fungoso's letter to his father
Sordido (in 11 ) Similarly the ' new nch,* or war profiteers, were especially
a topic of comment at the end of the Great War , for which see
