100'). May o. Annual Meeting. Reading of annual reports, election of officers and iransuotion of business.

At this meeting, Mr. W'illianj P. Upliam was elected an honorary member.

Aug. 26. A Field meeting was held at the home of Mr. Walter B. Osborn, at the "Osborn Farm," 42 Andover street. The President, Francis Henry Api)leton, jircsifleil and with well chosen words welcomed a large number of members and guests. An historical sketch of "the Farm" was given by Mrs. L. P. Osborn, including quotations from the Records, from the Diary of Eliza Southgate, 1802, and from descriptive i)OemB of Dr. Andrew Nichols, 1852, and of Mr. Walter Scott Lovejoy. This was followed by the story in verse of a young girl-wife .and one time neighbor across the way, .Sally Dealaud; entitled, "An old New England Bride, an Incident," I

composed aud read most gracefully by lier descendant Mrs. W. A. _^ ^ Lloyd, of Chicago. Hon. Kobert H. Rautoul tlieu added his always ^ welcome words, referring to a description of the Farm in Dr. Beutley's Diary in 1791 aud suggesting what a bit of beauty might become the standpipe on Buxton's Hill were vines planted aud grown about it. After the serving of refreshments by Mrs. H. Maria Palmer and her hospitality committee, the company ad- journed to Buxton's Hill where the Rev. John W. Hudson gave a most instructive and interesting talk on the geology of that re- gion. As this was the last opportunity to visit the hill before its destructiou, much interest was manifested.

Nov. 13. Mrs. Lyman P. Osborn gave a ''Report of the Conference of the American Library Association at Portland, Oregon, and the Post Conference Trip to Alaska" illustrated with souvenirs.

Dec. 13. Rev. Alfred P. Putnam, D. D., gave the Society a paper on "Put- namville and the Early Shoe Manufacturers of Danvers." As Dr. Putnam came from this part of Danvers aud his ancestors were among these first manufacturers, he was able to give us a most in- structive and entertaining paper. As this was the last time we were to see Dr. Putnam it will always be a great subject of con- gratulation that the Society was permitted to hear him on that occasion. 1906.

Jan. 10. Mr. John Albree of Swampscott gave his paper on "How Time Was Kept in the Days when we Lived under a King." Mr. Al- bree brought with him several old watches and an ancient clock, without case, which had been in his family over 200 years. He explained how time was kept in ancient days and surprised us by the information of the comi>aratively modern introduction of watches and clocks into common use. The lecture was most brilliant and much appreciated by the audience.

Feb. 21. Mr. Ezra D. Hines of Danvers gave an illustrated lecture on "A Vacation Trip in the British Isles with special reference to George Peabody, Old Danvers and George Downing." This lecture was held in the Masonic banquet hall and v^as much enjoyed by a large audience. Light refreshments were afterwards served in the rooms of the Society, adjoining.

At this meeting, in response to inquiries by friends aud the recom- mendation of the Executive Committee, it was voted by the Society that any members who wished to save themselves the trouble of paying annual dues might become Life Members on payment of $25.00.

Mar. 15. Miss Mary Elizabeth Poole, one of the members of the Society, gave a very interesting aud instructive paper on "Social Needs and Society Action." Miss Poole being at present engaged in the study of Social Service was able to speak largely from her own experience, giving also the history of the best known movements towards the betterment of social conditions among the poor.

April 19. This Day was observed appropriately by the Society. The graves of the Revolutionary Soldiers were decorated with flags, and the annual gift of the town of $5.00, with myrtle donated by the South Church, ensured a fine decoration of the Lexington Monu- uraent. The presentation of a drama by members and friends of the Society w^as unavoidably postponed one week, when, April 26th there was given in the Unitarian hall one of the best ama- teur performances ever seen in this town, no paius having been

The Society has lost by removal from town two of its most valued members, ]{ev. and Mrs. L. J. Thoma.s. The services of the latter as corresponding secretary were greatly appreciated by the .Society ami appropriate resolulifiiis were passed when she went away, fol- lowed by a gift at Christinas of a writing desk. Invitations have been received from, and delegates from the So- ciety have attended meetings of, the Bay State Historical League, Essex Institute, Haverhill Historical Society, Lynn Historical Society and Old Planters Society, gaining therefrom much interest and pleasure.

During the past year there have been added to our collection, 24 bound volumes, 53 pamphlets, 62 sheets, letters, proclamations, programs, etc., 14 samplars and other family records, and 19 articles for the cabinet, besides ■flie large collection, kindly left us by legacy by Miss Elizabeth C. Kimball.

Grateful acknowledgment is due the donors of the following bound vol- umes, pamphlets, manuscripts, etc., etc., relating in some way to our town or its citizens, now in the possession of the Society. We hope that all data which would assist in comjileting a history of the place, past or pres- ent, within its present boundaries, may be discovered and presented to the Society by its members and friends.

The Rooms of the Society have been opea as usual to visitors, every Mon- day afternoon from 2.30 till 5 o'clock, with members of the following com- mittee in attendance: —
