FREEMAN & SON, PRINTERS TO THE STATE. 1888, STD 0794 eh Retry Eee? Bred: To the Honorable General Assembly of the State of Rhode Island, etc., at its January Session, 1888 : The Commissioners of Inland Fisheries herewith present their annual report for the year 1887: SALMON. In March, 1887, ten thousand (10,000) land-locked salmon spawn were received by us from the U. 8S. Fish Commission and sent to C. A. Hoxie’s hatchery at Carolina, R. I., where they have been hatched with a loss of one per cent. An arrangement was entered into with Mr. Hoxie by which he will take charge of them until they are a year old, when the Commissioners will have them distributed in various waters of the State adapted to their nature. TROUT. One hundred and five thousand (105,000) brook trout fry were pur- chased by us. Forty thousand of these were placed in various public streams by the Commissioners. The balance, by persons interested, in the towns of Summit, East and West Greenwich, Greenville, North and South Kingstown, Mapleville, Westerly, Pascoag, Exeter, Smith- field, Warwick, Arcadia, North Scituate, Johnston, Hope Valley, Woon- socket, and North Providence. Great interest is taken in the effort to 4 REPORT OF COMMISSIONERS OF INLAND FISHERIES. restock our streams with brook trout, and we are assured of a large degree of success. We propose to continue our efforts in this line. BLACK BASS. This fish is now so well established in the various ponds and rivers of the State that it requires only protection during the spawning season, SHAD. This fish has been reported as more abundant than for some years previous to the restocking of State waters. CARP. The Commissioners are without any report from the two thousand carp distributed in 1886 to persons who applied for them. BAY AND COAST FISHERIES. This is a subject which sooner or later must have the careful con- sideration and legislation needed to afford better protection during the spawning season, or they will cease to be a source of income, pleasure or one of the attractions to the summer resorts of our State. Prices of most kinds of fishes have been quite as high as last year. The Commissioners present herewith a few statistics from various State Commissioners’ reports relating to the subject of restocking of waters, taken from the latest tabulated reports received, also the sums appropriated for the same. A number of the States have extensive hatcheries of their own. CALIFORNIA. 1885-6: Appropridtiomesses -occnee => posure eis esheets oe ator e enea ete $15,000 00 1886.
