Aquilegia Newsletter of the Colorado Native Plant Society . . dedicated to the appreciation and conservation of the Colorado native flora” Volume 28 Number 3 ANNUAL MEETING EDITION May - June - July 2004 DISTURBANCE IN NATURAL ECOSYSTEMS The 2004 Annual Meeting will be in Steamboat Springs in the Olympian Hall of the Howelsen Hill Lodge. The theme of the meeting is how natural disturbances affect ecosystems. The national forests near Steamboat Springs offer several examples of disburbances, including the forest blowdown of 1997, the fires of 2002 and mountain pine beetle infestations. A preliminary agenda is presented in this issue (page 2) and a reg- istration form is included as an insert. Please complete the reg- istration form and mail back by September 1. Karen Vail is coordinating the annual meeting and can be contacted at 970-870- 9565 for more information or to volunteer. LODGING: 20 rooms have been reserved for September 17 and 18 at the Rabbit Ears Motel, 970-879-1150. Mention CONPS. Rates are $65/night for 2 people (one queen bed), $59 for single, $89 for 2 queens and 1 king for up to four people. Pets accepted for $12. Continental breakfast, pass to the Health and Recreation center across the street with pool, hot springs, weight rooms. SILENT AUCTION: The second annual Silent Auction will be conducted, since last year’s auction raised over $400. Donations should be related to native plants. Items can be brought to the annual meet- ing or mailed to Pat. MERCHANDISE SALES: The Annual Meeting is the biggest sales event for the Society. We carry over 80 titles — from floras to ecology to gardening with native plants. Six volunteers are needed at the sales desk during the meeting. Volunteers are also needed to transport books and merchandise to Steamboat Springs from Denver. August 21 Field trip to Missionary Ridge Burn, Columbine Ranger District, San Juan National Forest, La Plata County, Colorado Trip Leaders: Mark Tucker and Sandy Lriedley The Missionary Ridge Burn above Durango, Colorado occurred in summer of 2002. We will have the opportunity to explore a small portion of the bum area. Unfortunately, many roads into the area are still closed as of the spring of 2004. We will meet at 9 AM at the San Juan Public Lands Office, 15 Burnett Court, Durango, Colorado. If the Missionary Ridge Road is open to the public, we will head up Lorest Service Road 682.
