OFnCE OF THE PRESIDENT

TO THE CLASS OF 1977:

During the brief period that I have been with you at Stiaw University, you have demonstrated in a positive manner your determination to prepare yourseWes to render a great service to mankind. With your cooperation and assistance, your academic program has been designed to prepare you for that service.

The task has not been easy, neither for you as you endured many hardships, nor for your sponsors whose personal sacrifices have helped to provide the opportunity for your educational development. But any hardships which you have experienced will give you the strength of character to make of this educational seed the fruit that will further develop your skills and nurture your constructive imagination.

As you depart from this educational institution, your task now is one of vigorous cooperation with those who endeavor to steer the course of man toward wholesome and desired objectives.

Good luck and best wishes for continued success.

Sincerely yours.

1976 HOMECOMING PARADE— TOGETHER

f^^'yjii

The Homecoming parade was held on a beautiful Saturday mor- ning in downtown Raleigh. The weather was chilly, but it couldn't chill the hearts of the Shaw family and fans.

NOVEMBER 13, 1976 DOWNTOWN RALEIGH

1976 HOMECOMING GAME

A beautiful but chilly afternoon provided tfie setting for ttie "76" Homecoming gridiron con- test. Tfiousands of alumni, relatives and friends once again returned to the ever-loving Shaw to get a taste of fun and rivalry.

Half-time excitement hit a fever pitch when the marching bands hit the field. The marching Rams took the field first but had to give it up to the marching Bears who took the crowd.

There was nothing to spoil the fun and fellowship that exists among the Shaw family, not even losing the game. Once again the ex- citement of traditional rivalry existed among friends.

30

BRASS CONSTRUCTION, CROWN HEIGHTS AFFAIR, POISON

The long week of lectures, convocations, dinners, and entertainment celebrating Founder's Day and Honnecoming activities finally ended.

The highlight of the activities v\/as the annual Homecoming Concert. The music of Poison, Crovs/n Heights Affair and Brass Construction enthralled the audience. After the show, the Shaw family celebrated in every corner of Raleigh.

The annual Worship Service on Sunday morning with alumni, friends and relatives of the Shaw family ended the week of fellowship.

Once again Shaw wrote in her book of memories of a tradition— the time for the uniting of friends. "Together, We Are One"!

^ ANNUAL SPRING ACTIVITY WEEK APRIL 12-16, 1977

COMMUNIVERSITY Y CONVOCATION

Jl

A

\

THE FAMILY ROOTS OF RALEIGH

Shaw University celebrated its an- nual Spring Activity Week, April 12- 17, 1977. The theme for the week was "The Family Roots of Raleigh" ... a historical look at Raleigh, its families, and their relationships with Shaw and the overall community.

The week's activity began with a University-wide Convocation on Tuesday, April 12, 1977, at 11:00 a.m. Guest speaker for the Convoca- tion was Charles G. Irving, Sr., co- founder, Irving-Swain Printing Co.

Many of Raleigh's senior citizens and old-line families were honored during the week. There were also many guests conducting workshops throughout the week. Roy Wood, Vice President, National Black Network; Harry Rhodes, co-star. Roots Television Series, N.B.C; and Carl Ventner, Jr., President of Durham Life Broadcasting Services headed the panelists for the workshops.

The highlights of the week includ- ed concerts by the United Heritage Gospel Choir, the Concert Band and the Jazz Band.

ANNUAL AWARDS DAY

"Achieving Excellence Through Togetherness In Study, Performance, and Service" was the theme for the annual Awards Day ceremonies in Spaulding Gymnasium.

The speaker for the occasion was Dr. Wllmoth Carter, Vice President of Research and Evaluation.

Dr. Carter said in her address: "Awards Day provides the occasion for recognition of achievements in varied areas of the un- iversity, academic and non-academic. It represents a type of "critic's choice" where the winners are applauded and the losers disclaimed. The question to be ask- ed is, 'Are they ends in themselves or means to an end? Do they represent per- formance or merely effort? Do they bespeak being truly educated, or are they indicative of miseducatlon?'

The awards you receive should not savor of ego-tripping, for whatever the award it can only be a milestone and not the acme of accomplishment. It should not be the meridian or fullest develop- ment, nor the zenith of accomplishment.

This should not be a time of boasting, for unless one's recognized accomplish- ment is grounded in literacy, knowledge, intellectualism, and language skills it bespeaks miseducatlon. College is useless if you leave it as Illiterate as when you came."

Awards were presented by Dr. Richard Fields, Dr. Kalyan Ghosh and Dean Mack Sowell.

Prince was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Prince A. Thomas, Sr. of Chicago, Illinois. He was a senior at the time of his death. During his stay here with us at Shaw he touched more lives with his winning smile and outstanding per- sonality than some of us realized. He was a member of Brothers Unlimited and the basketball team.

He lives on in the hearts and memories of the entire Shaw family and community.

"Beautiful People: the smile on many faces creating beautiful inspirations, reaching out and touching a brother; in the hearts of many people, a symbol of freedom for the mind, body and soul,"

Prince Albert Thomas was Beautiful.

ANDREW J. MNKANDE

Andrew was the son of Ambassador Y. S. Mnkande and Anna L. Mnkande of Tanzania, East Africa. He departed this life in November 1976 on a return trip from Alabama. He was an energetic sophomore at Shaw University and will always be remembered by the students, faculty and staff.

"Since death considers nothing but taking, I have no consolation except my belief that we shall all meet again.

A life taken in one place and birth given in anothe[

May God Rest Him in Peace."

Mrs. Dunn was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Chester Badgett of Garner, North Carolina.

She departed this life on Thursday, September 16, 1976, at Rex Hospital in Raleigh. She was employed in University Plant Services here at Shaw.

"When someone dear goes home to God ..^i%

To dwell within His heart . .

The love we shared is with us still.

It never can depart

And, oh, what peace it is to know

That other world is fair.

And only perfect happiness

Can touch our loved one therea

Mrs. Bertha Jones was a familiar face in the Business Office here at Shaw. She departed this life in December of 1976.

During the years she spent at Shaw, she gained the respect and friendship of many students and her co- workers. She will be missed by the many friends she had on campus.

"The Sun sets to close one day, but it returns to being another."

SHAW UNIVERSITY

MESSAGE FROM THE STUDENT GOVERNMENT ASSOCIATION

First of all, I would like to extend greetings to nny fellow students and warm congratulations to the 1977 graduates. We have struggled the long and winding roads of higher education and this is just the beginning. The time has come for us to drop our buckets in society for whatever it is worth. Wa are leaving one training environment and will be making different contributions. Our mission is to save the children and make the road better for them.

Shaw has provided the training for us to do anything with nothing, and the impossible with a little. As alumni of Shaw, wa must continue to climb the highest mountains and cross the widest seas. Whatever you conceive success to be, it is up to you to conquer it. Wherever your life carries you or you carry your life, let us not forget our stepping stones. I pray Shaw stays near your heart just as your loved ones.

To the graduates, I challenge you to continue your struggle and never give up. The potential you have shown and the intelligence you possess will help you achieve your goals in life.

I thank each of you for a prosperous year and for allowing me to work with you and for you. As part of our religious heritage, let us all continue to make God a part of our plans.

Remember Shaw is a private university and our contributions and ideas will always be needed for the future "Bears" to come. Let us be generous in a positive way for a positive Shaw.

Larry Williams President, S.G.A.

EDITORS MESSAGE

After many long and hard hours, we finally finished the 1977 Bear. The task was difficult for each of us and many times im- possible, but we kept the faith and hung in there.

There have been a lot of people in- volved in creating this annual, far too many to name individually. I give thanks to all who assisted in the task. I offer a very special thanks to the 1977 Bear staff and to our ad- visors, for they have performed their jobs well. The ideas and contributions of all will make 1976-77 a very memorable year for the Shaw family. We have captured a year of highlights to be remembered by all for a long time.

Finally, I would like to thank the students and Student Life staff for giving me the opportunity to serve as Editor-in-Chief of the Bear. I have enjoyed working with and for my fellow students. I also give thanks to my family for their patience and support.

There is a little something in The Bear for everyone.

Keep the Faith,

Michael W. Hall
