In a voluminous inflatable golf dome in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, a pan-Canadian cast of exceptionally talented and creative audio artists joined forces with a juried international selection of videos and video artists to create this quasi-legendary event. Here, BricoLodge presents the long-awaited surviving archives of live performances by vitaminsforyou, Camp, A_Dontingy, Laura Kavanaugh and Ian Birse, and A-Dontigny's jaw-dropping DJ/live set at AKA Gallery at the Digidome after-party. Unfortunately, the performances by liminaL Projects, Carrie Gates, and duul_drv, could not be with us today, but they survive in fond memories of those who attended this one-time spectacle of live experimental sound, glitch-pop drama, and new media madness. Furthering the otherworldly, lunar colony quality of the golf dome environment, five of the best video projectors in Canada were utilized to throw gorgeous video projections all over the walls of the dome, freestanding screens, and even set into motion as one of the projectors hopped on the back of a disco ball motor to send its messages around, and around, and around the dome...This event sparked many of the friendships that set BricoLodge in motion, spurring even more collaborations and events such as Phantom Power in North Bay, ON. Presented in 2002 by Saskatoon artist-run centre, paved Art + New Media, the event was organized by Dermot Wilson, Ellen Moffat, Carrie Gates, and Jon Vaughn. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ a_dontigny __________ A self-taught composer, Aimé Dontigny is one of the founding members of the "free-noise" collective Napalm Jazz (Free transgenique, 1998) and of the electronic duo morceaux_de_machines (liberum arbitrium, 2002). For the last years, he has been working for Montreal labels NoType, empreintes DIGITALes and Ambiances Magnetiques. He devotes himself eagerly to the challenges of improvised music both as a composer and producer. He is also involved in the development of new electronic music in Canada. His compositions are full of subtle quotes and his sonic palette adapts itself to many aesthetics, as reflected in his recent collaborations with Diane Labrosse (Telepathie, 2002), Paul Dolden and Chantal Dumas (Duophone, 2003). Laura_Kavanaugh _______________ Laura Kavanaugh's artwork has shifted from her original focus on still images to performance work in real-time sound and image creation. Recordings of prepared piano, voice, and low-strung violin became material for sound based video pieces Between Words (1999), Icicles (1999), and Score (2000). A performance of David Behrman's Wave Train opened up the possibilities of feedback loops in sound generation, and she began using samples and digital effects in performance.September-December 2001 was spent on a tour of performances in Toronto, Berlin, Hamburg, London, Budapest, and Krakow, and in the fall of 2002 she collaborates with Ian Birse on a series of audio/video performances and installations in Montral, Barcelona, Weimar and Budapest. Previous projects (together with Ian Birse) at http://members.shaw.ca/kbduo/ Ian_Birse _________ Since the early 1990's Ian Birse's work has evolved from guitar explorations of folk, blues, and jazz themes, through improvisation involving contact pickups, secondary bridges, and non-tempered tunings, to performance/ installations that employ real-time video manipulation and electronic sound in immersive environments. He has composed music for theatre and film, and made installations using time-based media for the 1998 Alberta Biennial (Bleaching Bones/Not the Title), the Works 1999 (New Ways to Strength and Beauty), and the Guelph Jazz Festival (Contact). Solo performances incorporating text, video, and improvised sound have been presented at Sound Symposium (St. John's), Jazz East (Halifax), Send + Receive (Winnipeg), the National Student Film Festival (Regina), Mountain Standard Time (Calgary), and the Vancouver Underground Film Festival. In October 2002 his ongoing collaborative work with Laura Kavanaugh continues at festivals in eastern Canada and Europe. Previous projects (together with Laura Kavanaugh) at http://members.shaw.ca/kbduo/ Camp ____ Obfuscationist composer, strategist of sonic vagueness, and sometimes even performer (Camp, Asyncdrone, Period Three, L'île de béton…), David Turgeon is also founder and director of the No Type label. Camp was started in 2000 by Turgeon who as was then making music under the name Period Three. The change of name was however symbolic of a search for a new approach to sound organization: techniques such as improvisational architecture & vague composition. Also a well defined framework of ethics concerning reappropriation & some sort of a filter for politics in arts along the way.Camp likes words. a word itself, camp clings to any semantic surface. It likes to provoke meaning. If glitch is just a process like another, then how interesting can it pretend to be? There is glitch in meaning, too. David Turgeon is also known as a graphic designer, inventor of arcane programming languages and the author of a graphic novel (to be published in 2004). Vitaminsforyou ______________ straight from Winnipeg's experimental electronic scene, vitaminsforyou has been exploring the rich relationship that exists between narration, meta-narration and microstructure in music since 1998. Grazing the fine line between logic and emotion, allowing the microscopic to give way to a provocative, compelling and gratifying melody, vitaminsforyou has been developing sound and music for theatre, dance, film, video, animation and prose across Canada working with artists in a variety of genres from electro-acoustic sound designers to some of Canada's darling pop practitioners. Recent performances include an invitation to play at Montreal's Mutek Festival, Toronto's Canadian Electronic Ensembles Festival, Saskatoon's Digidome Festival of contemporary sound, music, and digital video, and Winnipeg's Send and Receive Festival. vitaminsforyou has also opened for such acts as The Beans from Vancouver, Spookey Ruben from Toronto, Kepler from Ottawa, My Education from Texas, Tim Hecker from Ottawa, Mitchell Akiyama and Desormais from Montreal, SND from England, coingutter from Vancouver, The Notwist from Germany, Ghislain Poirier from Montreal, Themselves from Oakland, Polmo Polpo from Toronto, Holzkopf from Saskatoon, and duul_drv from Winnipeg. A recent move to Montreal in 2002 has vitaminsforyou currently working on projects with Juno-winning singer/songwriter Mike Feuerstack (Wooden Stars, Snailhouse), Greg MacPherson (G7 Welcoming Committee), Jay Churko from Transistor Sound & Lighting Co., poet Kevin Matthews (Juice Publishing), animator Julia Pung, songtress Emm Gryner, artist Sook-Yin Lee, and choreographers Andrew Tay and Dana Michael. look for a new full-length on the Montreal-based label intr_version that was released early November 2003 and a remix EP with exclusive new material and a Venetian Snares Remix coming soon. As well as an exclusive new track with Mike Feuerstack on an intr_version compilation Saturday morning empires out now. Max_Haiven __________ Max Haiven works (currently in Hamilton Ontario Canada) at becoming an artist, academic and activist and teasing those humourless categories to the best of his limited abilities. Max largely makes use of audio and video technologies in his art work, although sometimes he writes. He has released a few small-run CDRs, several web releases (scattered around Bricoldge, for the most part) and collaborates often with usual and unusual suspects. With Jon Vaughn, he worked on the CD “Front" released in 2002 by NoType.com of Montreal. Max has performed audio and video works at festivals and given recitals in Saskatoon, North Bay, Montreal and Halifax. As an academic, max likes cultural studies, critical theory and interesting books and art. His research is on discourses of creativity in/and globalization and the interplay of the concepts of art(ists) and work(ers) in/and history and neoliberalism. He is currently completing his MA and continuing on to his PhD at McMaster University. As an activist, max has been involved in many groups ranging from global social justice to student issues to peace groups. He hates capitalism and loves chocolate and wine. Jon_Vaughn __________ As an essential bad seed that makes mutations go off, Jon Vaughn's prolific practice spans DJing, improvisation, production, composition, event programming, VJing, painting, workshop facilitation, and playing zombies in low-budget quickies. Vaughn's electronic & electroacoustic music production works with experimental concepts and approaches to cultures of sound & how they are organized and connected or not why & what if, etc, while also exploiting various techno genres through his energetic, seamless, and shockingly fun style of performance. Always pushing himself to find the next aural fascination, Vaughn moves through many genres in his DJing repertoire, mixing old and new together to create deeply referential juxtapositions that can be appreciated by the seasoned ear. Digging deeper in Vaughn's musical closet, one finds a treasure trail of improvisation, collaborative compositions, and a maybe even a guitar. Renound for his exceptionally rich and detailed spastic delicacy, as well as his pervasive sense of humour, Jon Vaughn stands alone with his risqué audiopolitiks. Jon Vaughn is co-Director of the BricoLodge net.label with fellow artist and main-brain Carrie Gates, which is a culmination of the their pan-Canadian and International love networks, which span other net.labels (in which you will find more of Vaughn's releases) such as No Type, Panospria, Nishi & Slapart. Vaughn also helps develop the fabric of his community by organizing events with his collegues, selected events include: Digidome Festival of Electronic Art, hosted by Saskatoon-based artist-run centre paved Art & New Media in the (RIP) Ramada Golf Dome Digidome and Phantom Power, hosted by The Kennedy Gallery in North Bay Ontario in a very old haunted opera house. In October of 2003, Vaughn released an CD with the Montreal-based label and collective, No Type. The disc was released in conjuction with a live performance at the No Type-cureated Pre-rien sub-series of the Rien-a-Voir festival. The CD is entitled 'Front', and is the result of an intense three-year collaboration with Halifax-based activist and audio-visual artist, Max Haiven. Front is undoubtably Vaughn's (and Haiven's) most experimental, challenging, complex, and enjoyable work to date.
