FIELDIANA Geology NEW SERIES, NO. 19 Catalog of Type, Figured, and Referred Mazon Creek Fossils in Private Collections Mary R. Carman February 28, 1990 rublication 1407 PUBLISHED BY HELD MUSEUM OF NATURAL HISTORY Information for Contributors to Fieldiana Generab Fieldiana is primarily a journal for Field Museum staff members and research associates, although manuscripts from nonaffiliated authors may be considered as space permits. The Journal carries a page charge of $65.00 per printed page or fraction thereof. Payment of at least 50% of page charges qualifies a paper for expedited processing, which reduces the publication time. Contributions from staff, research associates, and invited authors will be considered for publication regardless of ability to pay page charges, however, the full charge is mandatory for nonaffiliated authors of unsolicited manuscripts. Three complete copies of the text (including title page and abstract) and of the illustrations should be submitted (one original copy plus two review copies which may be machine-copies). No manuscripts will be considered for publication or submitted to reviewers before all materials are complete and in the hands of the Scientific Editor. Manuscripts should be submitted to Scientific Editor, Fieldiana, Field Museum of Natural History, Chicago, Illinois 60605-24%, USA. Text: Manuscripts must be typewritten double-spaced on standard-weight, 8Vi- by 11-inch paper with wide margins on all four sides. If typed on an IBM-compatible computer using MS-DOS, also submit text on 5V4-inch diskette (WordPerfect 4.1, 4.2, or 5.0, MultiMate, Displaywrite 2, 3 & 4, Wang PC, Samna, Microsoft Word, Volkswriter, or WordStar programs or ASCII). For papers over 100 manuscript pages, authors are requested to submit a "Table of Contents," a "List of Illustrations," and a "List of Tables" immediately following title page. In most cases, the text should be preceded by an "Abstract" and should conclude with "Acknowledgments" (if any) and "Literature Cited." All measurements should be in the metric system (periods are not used after abbreviated measurements). The format and style of headings should follow that of recent issues of Fieldiana. For more detailed style information, see The Chicago Manual of Style (13th ed.), published by The University of Chicago Press, and also recent issues of Fieldiana. References: In "Literature Cited," book and journal titles should be given in full. Where abbreviations are desirable (e.g., in citation of synonymies), authors consistently should follow Botanico-Periodicum-Huntianum and TL-2 Taxonomic Literature by F. A. Stafleu & R. S. Cowan (1976 et seq.) (botanical papers) or Serial Sources for the Biosis Data Base (1983) published by the BioSciences Information Service. Names of botanical authors should follow the "Draft Index of Author Abbreviations, Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew," 1984 edition, or TL-2. References should be typed in the following form: Croat, T. B. 1978. Flora of Barro Colorado Island. Stanford University Press, Stanford, Calif., 943 pp. Grubb, P. J., J. R. Lloyd, and T. D. Pennington. 1963. Fieldiana: Botany, n.s., 6: 1-522. Illustrations: Illustrations are referred to as "figures" in the text (not as "plates"). Figures must be accompanied by some indication of scale, normally a reference bar. Statements in figure captions alone, such as "x 0.8," are not acceptable. Captions should be typed double-spaced and consecutively. See recent issues of Fieldiana for details of style. All illustrations should be marked on the reverse with author's name, figure number(s), and "top." Figures as submitted should, whenever practicable, be 814 x 11 inches (22 x 28 cm), and may not exceed llVi x 16Vi inches (30 x 42 cm). Illustrations should be mounted on boards in the arrangement to be obtained in the printed work. This original set should be suitable for transmission to the printer as follows: Pen and ink drawings may be originals (preferred) or photostats; shaded drawings must be originals, but within the size limitation; and photostats must be high-quality, glossy, black-and-white prints. Original illustrations will be returned to the corresponding author upon publication unless otherwise specified. Authors who wish to publish figures that require costly special paper or color reproduction must make prior arrangements with the Scientific Editor. Page Proofs: Fieldiana employs a two-step correction system. The corresponding author will normally receive a copy of the edited manuscript on which deletions, additions, and changes can be made and queries answered. Only one set of page proofs will be sent. All desired corrections of type must be made on the single set of page proofs. Changes in page proofs (as opposed to corrections) are very expensive. Author-generated changes in page proofs can only be made if the author agrees in advance to pay for them. THIS PUBLICATION IS PRINTED ON ACID-FREE PAPER. FIELDIANA Geology NEW SERIES, NO. 19 Catalog of Type, Figured, and Referred Mazon Creek Fossils in Private Collections Mary R. Carman 11 5 Oak Valley Drive Si. Peters. The abundant and diverse biota of this Pennsylvanian delta complex has been studied for almost 1 SO years, resulting in many taxonomic descriptions. Numerous Ma/on Creek fossils in private collections have been designated as type, figured, or referred specimens. The locations of privately owned specimens are less permanent than those of institutional collections. A review of 93 scientific articles on Mazon Creek fossils published between 1 844 and 1 987 indicates that 426 specimens belong to 69 private collectors. Because published (type, figured, and referred) specimens form the foundation of paleontology, knowing the current locations of these specimens is important. This paper, based on contacts with most of the 69 private collectors, provides current information on locations of their collections. Introduction Fossil-bearing concretions (nodules) are found in the Francis Creek Shale of the Carbondale For- mation of Illinois. Fossils in these concretions are termed "Mazon Creek fossils" because they were first collected along the banks of Mazon Creek in Grundy County in northeastern Illinois. Similar concretions were later found in other parts of Grundy County, as well as in Will and Kankakee counties. These fossils have drawn international attention for more than a century. The abundant and diverse biota of this Pennsylvanian delta com- plex along the northern coast of the Illinois Basin was first studied by Agassiz ( 1 844); Nitccki ( 1 979) provides a history of subsequent collecting and research. A total of 96 "natural" floral species (Pfefferkom, 1979) and 325 faunal species (S. R. Sroka, pers. comm., 1987) are estimated to occur in this area. Private collectors have always played an im- portant role in fossil study by recovering concre- tions and sharing their finds with paleontologists. Researchers have designated privately owned Ma- zon Creek fossils, like fossil specimens in insti- tutions, as type, figured, or referred specimens. Consequently, published Mazon Creek fossils are housed in museums, universities, and private col- lections. The International Codes of Botanical and 2^oo- logical Nomenclature recommend that all type specimens be preserved in permanent institutions. Article 72 of the International Code of 2^oological Nomenclature (Ride ct al., 1985. p. 147) stales that name-bearing types are to be "held in trust for science by all zoologists and by persons re- sponsible for their safe keeping." Furthermore, Recommendation 72D gives the responsibilities for preserving type specimens to museums or sim- ilar institutions. The International Code of Botan- ical Nomenclature (Voss et al., 1983, p. 9) states in Recommendation 7A: "It is strongly recom- mended that the material on which the name of a taxon is based, especially the holotype, be depos- ited in a permanent, responsible institution and that it be scrupulously conserved." Paleontologists have not always followed the recommendations of the International Codes; scientists studying Mazon Creek taxa are no exception. The fact that there CARMAN: CATALCXJ OF MAZON CREEK FOSSILS are no recommendations for the maintenance of figured and referred specimens contributes further to the problem. The purpose of this paper is to compile a list of the current location of all published Mazon Creek fossils cited as belonging to private collectors. In a review of approximately 450 articles on Mazon Creek fossils published between 1844 and 1987, 1 found that 93 articles cited 426 specimens as be- longing to 69 private collectors. Knowing the cur- rent location of all published specimens, especially types, is intrinsic to the science of paleontology. Since figured and referred specimens may be as essential as type specimens, they also are included in this catalog. I attempted to contact all of the private collec- tors in writing, using addresses obtained from Field Museum of Natural History, Northeastern Illinois University, or other collectors. A few collectors chose not to respond or could not be located. I sent as many as four letters to individuals who failed to respond. I also asked collectors for their assistance in finding other collectors I could not locate. Of the 69 cited private collectors, 51 were located, seven could not be located, and 1 1 are deceased. Of the 5 1 who were located, 47 con- firmed their holdings or indicated the current whereabouts of each specimen, and seven chose not to respond. Subsequent to publication, some specimens have changed ownership. Therefore, in addition to the 69 private collectors cited, eight additional private collectors (three of whom wish to remain anonymous and five of whom verified their holdings) and 1 1 institutions have become owners. Of the private collections of the 1 1 de- ceased owners, nine were located. The list of private collectors in this catalog does not include all of the individuals who have con- tributed specimens for scientific study. Also, this catalog does not list all privately owned specimens that were studied by researchers. Because many collectors donated their specimens to museums before the research was published, these specimen locations are recorded in museum collections. Only those specimens actually cited in publications as belonging in private collections are listed herein. Of the 426 specimens cited as privately owned and listed in this catalog, 165 now belong to mu- seums, 244 are known or thought to be in private collections, and 17 are known to be lost. Three specimens were incorrectly cited in publications as museum specimens when, in fact, they are pri- vately owned. Of the privately owned Mazon Creek type specimens listed in this catalog, there are 38 holotypes, 18 paratypes, 7 syntypes, 1 lectotype, and 1 paralectotype. Of the 38 holotypes originally cited as privately owned, 20 are known to be in museums, 1 5 are known or thought to be in private collections, and three are known to be lost. Given varying amounts of time, a private col- lection often ends up via gift or sale in a museum or university. Only under such stabilized housing can one expect to find important specimens in the future. Private collectors were asked whether they had plans for their published fossils: 1 0 replied no and 1 6 replied yes. Of the 1 6 affirmative responses, two planned to give their fossils to a relative; 10 planned to donate their fossils to a museum, uni- versity, or state geological survey; and four planned to sell their fossils. The collections of those private owners who were not located or who chose not to respond to this catalog should be considered of- ficially lost. Some of the early students of the Mazon Creek biota made their own collections. I chose not to list the collections of deceased professional pale- ontologists (Langford, Gurley, Scudder, and Wor- then) who subsequently contributed their private- ly owned specimens to their respective institutions. Thus, the Langford collection is at ism and fmnh; Gurley collection is at fmnh (uc) and usnm (Lacoe collection); Scudder collection is at Mcz and usnm; and Worthen collection is at at least four institu- tions: USNM, UMMP, ui-Urbana (see Hansman & Scott, 1967), and isgs (see Kent, 1982). The catalog is arranged alphabetically by the collector's last name, followed by status of collec- tion, collector's address, new collector/collection (indicated by "j"), and new address, if applicable. Within a private collection, specimens are listed alphabetically by genus and species, then numer- ically. Collectors who responded chose how they would like their name, or name with address, list- ed. Addresses for those collectors who did not want their addresses listed herein are available through the author. For those collectors who chose not to respond, the status of their fossils could not be confirmed. Each cited specimen is accompanied by the fol- lowing information: name as published; author and year of publication (I did not cite all editions of books and articles; however, in all cases, an effort was made to cite the first edition); designation (type, figured, or referred specimen); private col- lector's specimen number and/or current catalog number (separated by " — " when changed from one to the other); citation, including author, year, page of description or reference, illustrations, and FIELDIANA: GEOLOGY measurement tables; specific locality information; remarks; and subsequent species assignment and citation. The format is as follows: Collector [Status] Address City, state, zip i New Collector/Collection Genus species Author, year Designation: number -> subsequent infor- mation Citation Locality Remarks = Genus species Designation Citation Remarks The geologic horizon (the same for all specimens) is Pennsylvanian, Westphalian D. Carbondale Formation. Francis Creek Shale. The locality gen- erally is Will, Grundy, or Kankakee counties, Il- linois, U.S.A.
