With the advent of railways the old sporting print disappeared, sporting centres gradually became within the reach of all, and the individual character to a great extent departed. The change in costume had also an important effeft and many curious and interesting figures departed for ever. Gone is posting, the coach has become the appanage of the millionaire, and the old inns grow scarcer and scarcer. The luxury of modern times has not tended to increase the pictur- esque which is so evident in the early sporting prints. Moreover there is an amount of dash and go in the prints which is posi- tively exhilarating. It seems as if both painter and engraver were alike enjoying the sport they portrayed, and this is espe- cially observable in the drawings of Aiken. What could be more spirited than Aiken's Something Slap, or his series of Steeple- chasing? Again, the two prints of the Elephant and Castle, one after Pollard and the other after S. J. E. Jones, contain an amazing amount of quaint and interesting episode. In faft, every sporting print contributes something of interest or amusement, and the important coUedion which I am now exhibiting prac- tically forms a history of English sport for the best part of a century.
