MCZ LIBRARY HARVARD UNIVERSITY CAMBRIDGE. MA USA PRINTED BY TAYLOR AND FRANCIS, RED LION COURT, FLEET STREET. INTRODUCTION, THE chief object in preparing the present Catalogue has been to give at one view a complete list of all the species of the Lepidopterous Insects of the family Papi- lionidee now in the British Museum Collection, and a reference to those species known to exist in other collections, but which are at present desiderata in the Museum Collection, to enable travellers, collectors and others to assist in completing the national collection. An indication of the separate locality of each species is given, and in most cases the sex is also noticed. Great care has been taken to adapt the generic and specific names first used to the genera or species, and a reference has been made to the works in which the species have been described and figured. In those cases where the two sexes of the same species, or any particular individual state or variety belonging to it, have been differently named, the name or figure ex- clusively appertaining to the state or individual is placed after the indication of the specimen to which it applies. Mr. George Robert Gray has taken great care in the determination of the species, the verification of the synonyms, in arranging them in accordance with the present state of the science, and in describing the species and varieties which appear not to have been previously recorded. Figures of the new species and varieties contained in the Museum Collection have been appended, from drawings on stone by Miss Elizabeth and Mr. William Wing, and coloured by Mr. Standish. Papilio Richmondia. Papilio (Ornithoptera) Richmondia, G. R. Gr. Male. PI. II. f. 1.—Primary wings are similar to those of P. Priamus, both in colour and markings, except that the irregular rich green band, which commences at the base and runs along the inner margin and then the outer margin towards the anterior angle, extends to a little beyond the first median nervule ; while in all the other species it reaches the fifth subcostal nervule. Secondary wings are also similar; but the round black spots are four and sometimes five in number, com- mencing in the space between the costal nervure and the first subcostal nervule, but the first and second are without the small golden spot which is found in P. Priamus. The under surface of the primary wings is like that of P. Priamus in the form of the markings, but it exhibits a bluish tinge, and the spots between the nervules are more distinctly separated into two parts in each space by a broader band of black, that runs from the fifth subcostal to the first discoidal nervules. The under surface of the secondary wings is also like that of P. Priamus in general appearance ; but the greater part of the surface is of a bluish green ; the base and around the nervure inwardly of the discoidal cell, black ; the spot between the costal nervure and the first subcostal nervule is of an irregular form and of a king- yellow : this colour extends around the outer margin between the black spots and the margin ; the space between the third median nervule and the submedian nervure is mostly bluish green, but posteriorly yellow, with the base and a spot near the outer margin black ; the inner margin brown. Female. Pl. II. f. 2.—Primary wings similar in markings to those of the female of P. Priamus, but they are less in size and are covered by numerous minute black scales, which give them an obscure appearance. Secondary wings are also similar, except that the large spots, which are of the same tear-shaped form, between the nervules along the outer margin touch the nervule on each side ; and the four between the second subcostal and the third median nervules are similar to one another in having a black sublunate spot in the middle of each, which is sometimes connected to the outer margin ; the two spaces between the costal nervure and the second subcostal nervule are marked with two irregular spots each, the one nearest the margin being ochraceous ; the anal angle has a subquadrate spot of ochre colour. The under surface of all the wings is similar in markings to the upper side, but the white colour is not so obscured by minute black specks; each large tear-shaped spot on the secondary wings has the outer portion yellow ; the spot between the first and second subcostal nervules and the one at the anal angle partake more of the tear-shape than those of the upper side, and it contains a brown spot, somewhat like the others in form. In Collection (Brit. Mus.) from Richmond River, New South Wales. Males and Female. 3. Papilio Pronomus. Papilio (Ornithoptera) Pronomus, G. R. Gr. $. Papilio Priamus 6, Lucas, Lepid. Euot. t. 1? ?. Ornithopterus Poseidon ?, Westw. Cab. Or. Ent, pl. 14% Male. Pl. I. f. 1—In general appearance it is like that of the P. Priamus, but is rather smaller, and the primary wings (beside the prominent bands of rich green) have the outer side of the median nervure and more or less of the base of the median nervules ornamented with the same rich green. Secondary wings have the outer margin much narrower than in P. Priamus, but with three rounded black spots, one on each space between the costal nervure and the discoidal nervule ; the spot that is situated between the second subcostal and discoidal nervules is sometimes very small ; beneath each of these spots is, in some specimens, a small golden spot. The under surface of the primary wings is marked very similarly to that of P. Priamus, but the golden green partakes of a bluish tinge throughout its surface. The under surface of the secondary wings is also similarly marked, but the general surface is bluish, with the marginal portion golden green; the golden spot above the black spot between the costal nervure and the first subcostal nervule is of a more lengthened form, though it is sometimes very small; the golden spot below the second, third and fourth black spot is not so PAPILIONIDZ. 3 prominently marked as in P. Priamus; the outer black margin is very narrow, and the anal angle is buffy yellow with a black heart-shaped spot, while in P. Priamus this space is black with a small buffy yellow mark. Female. Pl. I. f. 2.—This sex agrees better with the figure given in the ‘ Voyage de l Astrolabe,’ t. 4, than with any figure that represents the female of P. Priamus; but it differs from it by the marking in the discoidal cell of the primary wings being more diffused towards the disco-cellular nervules ; the other white markings are similar in position and form, but in some cases they are rather larger. The secondary wings are also like the above-mentioned figure ; the four large buffy white spots between the nervules retain somewhat of the tear- shaped form, especially the two that occupy the two spaces between the second subcostal and the first median nervules; but none of the spots advance to the disco-cellular nervules, nor to the median nervure, nor is there any white spot within the discoidal cell as is represented in that figure, though they possess the black spot in the middle of each; the anal angle is buffy white, showing the black spot that exists on the under surface ; and at the anterior angle there are two buffy white spots. The under surface of the primary wings is like the upper; but the mark in the discoidal cell is not so diffused. The under surface of the secondary wings is also like the upper side ; but the two spots at the anterior angle and the outer portion of the space between the nervules are of a rich yellow; and the space at the anal angle is equally as prominent as the others. ; : In Collection (Brit. Mus.) from Cape York, Northern Australia. Males and Female. The female given by Mr. Westwood as that of P. Poseidon must be considered the same as the one above- described ; but it differs from the specimen contained in the collection that was brought with the males in several particulars, viz. the marking in the discoidal cell of the primary wings is not diffused towards the discos cellular nervules ; and there is only a single spot between the second discoidal and the first median nervules ; the two spots between the third median nervule and the submedian nervure are much less in size. The secondary wings have the white spots between the nervules more of a tear-shape, and the black spot in the middle of each is rather larger and of a more decided black ; there is not any ochraceous spot represented between the costal and the first subcostal nervule ; the black spot at the anal angle is placed at the inner part of the white. It should also be observed that this figure is eight inches across from tip to tip of the primary wings, and therefore three-quarters of an inch larger than the specimen represented on Pl. I. f. 2. 4, Papilio Archideus. Omnithoptera Priamus ?, Boisd. Voy. de V Astrolabe, t. 4. 1% Uy Omithoptera Priamus, var. 2, Boisd. Sp. Gen. Lep. i. p. 174. Papilio (Ornithoptera) Archideus, G. R. Gr. This species agrees in many particulars with the female of P. Pronomus, but the white of the secondary wings reaches to the disco-cellular nervules and a portion of the median nervure, and it also occupies a small space within the discoidal cell, while the black spots between the nervules are of a larger size. Examples of the male from Celebes are at present unknown, which is much to be regretted, as an examina- tion of that sex would greatly assist in defining whether it ought to be considered a distinct species or not. It is however placed as distinct, on account of the characters pointed out in the above short notice. 5. Papilio Poseidon. Omithoptera Poseidon, EZ. Doubl. Ann. Nat. Hist. xvi. p. 173. Id. Gen. of D. Lep. p. 4. 3. Omnithopterus Poseidon, Westw. Cab. Or. Ent. pl. 11 ¢. This species differs from P. Pronomus by the rich green colour narrowly extending along Goth sides of the median nervure, and partly or entirely along the course of the nervules of the primary wings towards the outer margin ; and there is not any black spot in the buffy yellow space at the anal angle beneath the secondary wings. The markings beneath the primary wings, and almost the entire surface beneath the secondary wings, are of a B2 4 LEPIDOPTEROUS INSECTS. yellowish green, with some golden yellow between the row of black spots and the outer margin; the latter is bordered very narrowly with black. It is to be regretted that the female of this species has not yet been recorded from Darnley Island; there cannot be much doubt that it would exhibit some marked differences from that sex of the other species, as 1s the case with the male. In Collection (Brit. Mus.) from Darnley Island, North of Australia. Male. Mr. Westwood has, in his ‘ Cabinet of Oriental Entomology,’ drawn attention to a description of P. Priamus, which, as he observes, seems to approach P. Poseidon; it is given by Dr. De Haan, in his fine work on the Insects of the Dutch Settlements, as from New Guinea. “ Smaller (than P. Priamus). Expansion of wings six inches. Anterior wings: brown spot under the median vein longer, beginning at the fourth branch ; median vein bordered with green. The posterior wings have no black spots on the green patch. Underneath the anterior wings have the discoidal cell marked with a green spot, extending half its length; and the green spots between the veins are separated from each other by a broader black band ; the anal angle of the posterior wings is yellow, with a small black spot ; the patch in the middle is yellowish green; the golden yellow marginal spots between the first veins are wanting ; the six black spots are smaller.” 6. Papilio Euphorion. Ornithoptera Priamus ?, EL. Doubl. List of Lepid. Ins. Brit. Mus.i. p. 1. Papilio (Ormithoptera) Euphorion, G. R. Gr. Female. Pl. II. f. 3.—In size and general appearance it approaches very near the female of P. Priamus ; but the band in the discoidal cell of the primary wings contains a small spot, which is also the case with the white streak between the fourth and fifth subcostal nervules ; and the one between the fifth subcostal and discoidal nervules is divided into two unequal parts ; the spots near the median nervure, between the first, second and third median nervules, are smaller. The tear-shaped spots on the secondary wings are of a less size and more distinctly formed, while the dark fuscous spot in the middle of each is much larger than those of any other species known ; the spot in each space between the costal nervure and the second subcostal nervule is ochra- ceous ; as is also the space at the anal angle. The white spots of the upper surface are all speckled with minute black specks, and so is the ochraceous spot between the first and second subcostal nervule. The markings on the under surface of all the wings are similar to those on the upper side, both in shape and colour. Several specimens of this butterfly were brought from the interior of the northern portions of Australia by the late Allan Cunningham, and they were all of the same sex. In Collection (Brit. A specimen of this species is contained in the valuable collection of W. C. Hewitson, Esq., which differs from that figured in several particulars ; viz. the primary wings have the mark near the middle of the discoidal cell nearly as broad as long; while the three spots at the disco-cellular nervules are wanting, which is also the case with the spots below and close to the median nervure, except at the bases of the second and third median nervules, where there is a slight indication of a spot; the spots between the median nervure and the outer and PAPILIONIDZ. 9 inner margins are more oval in form, and are placed more in the middle of the spaces between the nervules, except the one between the second discoidal and first median nervules, which touches the apex of the median nervure ; the series of spots along the outer margin are more prominent ; all the spots of these wings are more inclined to yellow than in the specimen contained in the Collection of the Museum. The secondary wings are similar to the specimen referred to, but the ochraceous colour does not extend so far towards the outer margin, nor is it spotted with black, but this space is broadly bordered anteriorly with yellow ; the spots along the outer margin are rather smaller, and the one between the submedian nervure and inner margin is obliterated. The under surface of the primary wings is similar to the upper side, but along the outside of the apical part of the costal nervure and the disco-cellular nervures of the primary wings there is a yellow mark, and most of the under surface of the secondary wings is dark ochraceous, having only a streak and a spot of black ; otherwise it is similar to the specimen figured. This specimen was brought from Quito. 31. Papilio Philoxenus. Papilio Philoxenus, G. R. Gr. Lep. Ins. of Nepaul, p. 5. pl. 2. Boisd. Sp. Gen. Lep..i. p. 264. 88. L. Doubl. Gen. of D. Lep. p. 8.14. The secondary wings are deep black, with a large space of ochraceous white partly clothed with black scales near the middle of the wing, which is divided into eight unequal spots by the apical portion of the nervure which forms the discoidal cell and by the bases of the nervules; six lunes of dull red are placed along the outer margin, decreasing in size to the anterior angle, and there is a small reddish lune at the anal angle. The under surface of all the wings is deep black, with the same markings as are exhibited on the upper surface, but they are much clearer in colour and thereby more prominent. In Collection (Brit. Mus.) from Ceylon. This species approaches very much to the last variety of P. Diphilus, but the primary wings are rather pointed and narrower throughout ; though the specimen is a female, it is of a deeper black than those of the last species, and the white is more prominent, although it is somewhat obscured by scattered black scales; the white in the discoidal cell of the secondary wings occupies a larger space, and is surrounded with seven spots of the same colour. 36. Doubl. Ann. Nat. Hist. xvi. (1845) p. 176. Id. Gen. of D. Lep. p. 13. 99. Male. Pl. VI. f. 2.— Wings above black, traversed by a broad bright green fascia divided by the ner- vures, commencing in the discoidal cell of the anterior wing, and terminating on the immer margin of the pos- terior wings, of which it occupies fully two-thirds. This band is nearly straight on its inner side, but externally it is suddenly widened below the radial nervure of the anterior wings, and much dentated on the posterior wings. It is preceded on the costa by a large subquadrate spot of the same colour divided into four by the nervures. At the apex of the anterior wings are two elongate green spots, followed on the outer margin by a series of ge- minate spots, and a simple round one at the anal angle of the same colour. On the posterior wings, towards the outer margin, are three rounded green spots, each followed by a small dot of the same colour (sometimes very indistinct). These are succeeded by three geminate spots; the first rounded, the second elongate, the third rounded, near the anal angle and almost touching the transverse band. Below fuscous, the anterior wings darker at the base ; towards the anal angle a marginal series of five or seven small white spots placed in pairs between the nervules, between which and the margin are two or three very minute white dots. Posterior wings with three black strize in the cell, a macular band of a pale gold colour near the outer margin, and two points of the same colour near the anal angle. “Head and thorax black, spotted with white. Abdomen fuscous, above with the edges of the segments paler, below with five series of white spots ; anal valves rounded. « This species is closely allied to Papilio Nireus, but has the band much wider and somewhat different in its direction, and the anal valves are much rounder.””—Ann. III. f. 3.— Above, wings white, with a broad black border along the outer margin, this border divided on the anterior wings by a white line interrupted by the nervules, commencing below the second median nervule and extending nearly to the anal angle ; on the posterior by a series of six lunules ; anterior wings black at the base, crossed immediately beyond the base by a transverse band, followed by another directed rather more out- wardly ; another broader band crosses the cell about its middle, sometimes extending beyond the median nervule ; a fourth band crosses the cell between this and its termination, where there is a fifth ; neither of these extends below the median nervule. Posterior wings tailed, with two transverse bands near the base, of which one is nearly continuous with the first band of the anterior wings; the second, often almost macular, sometimes nearly wanting, commences a little within the second band of the anterior wing, its outer edge being nearly continuous with the inner edge of the band of the anterior wings, traverses the wing outside the cell, and at its termina- tion curves round so as to reach the end of the first fascia, and is here marked with two greyish lunules ; on the abdominal margin, near the anal angle, is a small pale spot, and the black border is here powdered with grey. Tails black, edged with white. « Below, all the markings nearly as above, but of a pale brown ; the white lunules of the posterior wings are edged with black ; the second band composed first of a brown fascia, then a series of seven or eight red spots, bordered with black. “Head black, with two white lines in front ; antennz black. Thorax black above, with two pale lateral lines ; below grey. Abdomen black above, grey below, the sides with the margins of the segments pale. «“ This species is closely allied to P. Nomius of Esper, but may be known by its smaller size, the line in the black border of the anterior wings instead of a series of dots, and some other characters.” —Ann. Nat. Hist. Female.—The second band from the base of the primary wings is gradually narrower towards the inner margin, and the third band does not advance beyond the median nervule. The second band from the base of the secondary wings is more or less apparent ; in some it is only slightly indicated at the base between the first and second median nervules ; and the black spot at the base between the discoidal and first median nervules is entirely wanting. In Collection (Brit. Mus.) from Northern India (Sylhet). 30 LEPIDOPTEROUS INSECTS. 141, Papilio Parmatus. Papilio Parmatus, G. R. Gr. Pl. III. f. 2.—The primary wings yellowish white, with the base slightly black, and five black bands across from the anterior margin towards the imner margin; the first reaches to the inner margin, the second nearly so, but the third, fourth and fifth extend only to the median nervure, and these are broader than the former ones ; a broad black border along the outer margin which is divided into two bands by a narrow line of yellowish white, and this again is apparently separated by the nervules. The secondary wings yellowish white, with the base black, and then a band, which is a continuation of the first band of the primary wing, reaches only to the median nervure ; a black spot at the base between the first and second median nervules ; and in the middle of the space between the second and third median nervules is a black spot, having below it a white and a black line and then a white lime ; along the outer margin is a broad black border, which is divided by a series of six white lunules ; the four next the anal angle are powdered above with grey, and with a black spot, small and somewhat rounded at the anal angle. The under surface of the primary wings is marked similarly to the upper side; but it is white tinged with yellow at the base, and the bands are brown. The under surface of the secondary wings is white, having a brown band near and along the inner margin, which ends in a black line, a crimson line, and then a black line ; the anal angle white with a black spot; a second irregular band crosses the wing near its middle, formed inwardly of black, then crimson, and outwardly of black ; this band is connected with the inner one by a black spot, having a crimson line outwardly ; the markings on the outer margin are similar to those of the upper side, but a portion of the band is brown at the anterior angle. This species is much allied to P. Anticrates, but the band on the under surface down the middle of the wing differs in several particulars, as is best exemplified in the figure. In Collection (Brit. Plate III. f. 1.—* Above, anterior wings whitish, slightly tinged at the base with greenish, the outer margin broadly fuscous black, divided by a whitish line extending from the second median nervule nearly to the anal angle ; near the base are two transverse fuscous bands, continued across the posterior wings beyond the middle ; a third band crosses the middle of the cell, extending beyond the median nervure ; a fourth covers the end of the cell, nearly touching the black border. Posterior wings tailed, with a broad fuscous black margin marked with a series of whitish lunules between the nervules, less defined towards the anal angle, where they are margined with bluish, the abdominal margin black ; the terminations of the two transverse bands marked by four yellowish lunules, bordered with black, of which two are placed outside the second band, two between these and the ab- dominal margin ; tails black, bordered with whitish. “ Below, all the wings with the markings nearly as above, but there is an indication of a second pale line in the dark margin of the anterior wings, and on the posterior wings two additional red lunules outside the second band near the costa. “ Head brown, white anteriorly ; antennz black. “Thorax brown above, with two white lines anteriorly, below greyish white. The secondary wings are yellowish white, having the first and second bands of the primary wings continued to the anal angle, where they unite; the outer margin is bordered with black, having two short lines of yellowish white at the anterior angle, but towards the posterior part of the inner margin it is omamented with yellowish white and grey lunules ; the anal angle has a large patch of bright yellow with a black lunule, having a grey lunule in the middle. The under surface of all the wings is very similar in colour and markings, but the outer margin is less black ; the commencement of the middle band of the secondary wings has a bright yellow spot, margined internally with white and outwardly with black ; and below this spot is a short white line on the outward side of the band; the patch at the anal angle is partly white and partly yellow. Note.—Mr. Hewitson possesses a specimen of a male insect which is supposed to be a variety of this species, having the oblique band of the four wings distinctly marked, but of the same black colour as the other parts of the wings ; otherwise they are similar in their markings and general colour. It is marked as from Minas Geraes. 205. Papilio Mezentius. Papilio Mezentius, EL. Doubl. Ann. of Nat. Hist. xiv. (1844) p.417. Id. Gen. of D. Lep. Pap. p. 17. no. 181. Pl. Ill. f. 4.—Adove. “Anterior wings black, with a narrow macular whitish band commencing indistinctly upon the costa, traversing these wings considerably beyond the discoidal cell, and terminating on the disc of the posterior wings, where the last spot is divided into three parts by the disco-cellular and the last branch of the median nervure. Posterior wings black, sprinkled beyond the middle with a few bluish scales, deeply dentate ; the third tooth from the anal angle prolonged into a long spatulate tail, marked, in addition to the white fascia, with three somewhat rose-coloured spots placed transversely between the abdominal margin and the termination of the macular band, which is here slightly tinted with rose-colour. Beyond these are three lunules of the same colour, one above the anal angle, the others close to the margin, between the first, second and third branches of the median nervure, succeeded by two sigmoid red spots, and near the anal angle by a whitish one. Anal angle itself red. Cilia white, except at the extremity of the dentations. « Below paler than above, and in addition to the markings of the upper surface there is a narrow white line near the outer margin of the anterior wings, extending from the fourth branch of the median nervure to the anal PAPILIONIDA. 41 angle, and on the posterior wings an indistinct macular flexuous white band preceding the marginal series of lunules and spots. “Head black ; palpi yellow ; thorax black, spotted below with yellowish ; abdomen fuscous, with a yellowish lateral line. “From the west coast of America (probably of New Granada or the Ecuador). Closely allied to P. Hee- torides, but may be easily known from it, as the macular white band begins nearer the apex of the anterior wings, crosses the wing at some distance beyond the discoidal cell, and is continued nearly in a direct line to the disc of the posterior wings, only a slight portion being within the discoidal cell.” —Ann. The under surface of the primary wings brownish black, with a macular band across at the fore part of the discoidal cell, composed of four unequal spots; the first is a long triangle of bluish white ; the second is placed within the discoidal cell, partly of bluish white and buffy white; the third is at the base of the discoidal and PAPILIONIDA. 45 first median nervules, partly bluish white and buffy white; while the fourth is below the first median nervule, and is very small and of a buffy white. It is by comparison with Jones’s figure (?) that this species has been named P. Iphidamas. Though it is necessary to say, that the figure differs in some respects from the specimens, yet it is so slight that it is thought best to adopt the Fabrician name rather than give a new one; as the specimens themselves do not exactly agree in the size of the white space on the primary wings, which is rather larger in Jones’s figure than in any of the specimens in the Museum. 226. The secondary wings bronzy black, with margins between the dentations buffy white ; a transverse curved band of car- mine extends from the anal angle towards the first subcostal nervule, and is divided by the nervules into six un- equal spots ; the first at the anal angle large and subquadrate ; the second, third and fourth are the largest and are of an oblong form ; the fifth is much smaller, and the sixth is very small and rounded ; these last three are more distinctly separated by the black nervules from one another than is the case with the others. The under surface of the primary wings is very similar to the upper side, but the band is more decidedly white. The under surface of the secondary wings is brownish black, having the same formed band as on the upper side ; but the spots are more distinctly separated, and of a pinkish white margined with some carmine scales, while the spot at the anal angle is smaller and less quadrate. Like P. drcas in general appearance, but the spot in the discoidal cell of the primary wings does not occupy so large a space, and is of a somewhat triangular form ; the outer margin has nine minute lunes of white scales between the nervules. The transverse band of the secondary wings extends less towards the base of the wings, and thereby it is not quite so wide as in P. Arcas, and it appears to be of a lighter colour, being pale scarlet with the anterior part and inner margin yellow, which colour is also prominent on the disco-cellular, the base of the discoidal, and the three median nervules. In these differences it agrees best with P. drriphus, Boisd., but this last-mentioned species has the band rather narrower, though the discoidal cell is occupied by a larger quantity of the yellowish scarlet colour ; and it is easily distinguished both from P. Arcas and the female above noticed, by the dentations of the secondary wings being more obtuse, and the margin between the dentations being bordered with crimson, and also by the outer margin of the primary wings being ornamented with four very minute spots of crimson scales. The secondary wings deep bluish black, with the outer margin between the den- tations pinkish white ; a large space of carmine, somewhat obscured anteriorly by some black scales, is placed below the discoidal cell, and is divided into six spots by the nervules; the first from the inner margin is only slightly apparent and linear, the second to the fifth are large and oblong, while the sixth is small and subtriangular. The under surface of the primary surface is deep black, with the summits clearer. The under surface of the secondary wings is deep black, with four small spots of pinkish white ; these are the posterior portions only of the large spots that are seen on the upper side ; ther¢ is also another subquadrate spot of pmkish white, which is not seen on the upper side. This sex is very like in general appearance to P. Lysander, Cr. ; but the oblique band of this latter species is narrower towards the apex, and it extends only to the second median nervule, while it is of the same greenish blue colour. The secondary wings have only four oblong spots of carmine, and the fourth is always small and sub- quadrate. The two specimens of the male insect are contained in Mr. Wallace’s Collection, that exhibit some appearance of white on the outer side of the apex of the subtriangular space of greenish blue, which is more prominent on the under surface in the form of three unequal spots ; one between the second and third median nervules, while two are placed between the third median nervule and the submedian nervure. The under surface of the primary wings is similar to the upper side both in colour and marking; the base is spotted with carmine. The under surface of the secondary wings is like the upper side ; but the spots are six in number, of a less size, and of a crimson colour, with the fore part of the two largest pinkish white; the base has two spots of carmine. Papilio Evagoras, Westw. MSS. Male. Pl. IX. f. 3.—The primary wings deep black, rather clearer at the summits; an oblique band of yellowish white scales, which commences from the middle of the inner margin, and extends to the middle of the second median nervule; and there are some scattered minute white scales in advance and on the sides of this band. The secondary wings deep black, with the borders between the dentations narrowly fringed with white ; a transverse band composed of five unequal spots of rich carmine ; the first at the anal angle is subquadrate, the next two are nearly equal and oblong, the fourth is smaller and oblong, while the fifth is only indicated by some rather scattered scales, but in some specimens this spot is not apparent; the inner margin is partly scarlet and partly black. The under surface of the primary wings is bronzy black, with the white band as prominent as on the upper side; the base has two spots of scarlet. The under surface of the secondary wings is bronzy black, with the same transverse band as is seen on the upper side, but it is composed of five distinct spots ; that at the anal angle is oblique and entirely of pale scarlet ; the three next are rosy white, with the outer ends pale scarlet ; the fifth spot is rather large and entirely pale scarlet; while at the base of the wing there are two deep scarlet spots. Female. Pl. IX. f. 4.—The primary wings brownish black, with a large space of buff-white, which is divided into four spots by the median nervure and by the bases of the first and second median nervules. The secondary wings brownish black, with the outer margin between the dentations slightly bordered with white; a large space in the middle of the wing of a pale carmine, which is towards the anal angle partly ochraceous ; it is composed. of six unequal spots, one of which occupies nearly the outer half of the discoidal cell, while the others are placed below the cell, thus occupying the basal portion of the spaces between the nervules, except between the first and second discoidal nervules, where it is partly marked with pale carmine ; and the space between the third median nervule and the inner margin is also of the same colours. The under surface of the primary wings is bronzy black, with the same spot as is exhibited on the upper side but the base of the wing has two scarlet spots. The under surface of the secondary wings is also bronzy black, 62 LEPIDOPTEROUS INSECTS. with the same broad band, though the spot in the discoidal cell and that between the first and second subccstal nervures are not so large as they are on the upper side, nor so deep in colour; it is rosy white, with the outer ends of the second, third and fourth, and the fifth entirely, rose-colour; the base of the wing has two spots of scarlet. In Collection (Brit. Mus.) from Venezuela. A specimen of the male in the collection of Mr. Wallace differs in having the oblique band on the primary wings shorter and broader than on the specimen described above. VII. f. 3— Above, anterior wings black, the disc with a large whitish spot divided by the median nervure, below which is a spot composed of scattered whitish scales, outer edge with indistinct whitish spots between the nervules. Posterior wings dentate, crossed beyond the cell by a broad band composed of six spots of a dull crimson, externally paler, and tinged with buff, the first roundish, the second, third, fourth and fifth somewhat wedge-shaped, the sixth nearly square ; outer margin dentate, cilia between the teeth whitish. “ Below, anterior wings as above; the posterior wings with four spots at the base and a line along the abdominal margin bright crimson; the transverse band paler than above. “Head black, with two red spots behind; antenne short, black. Thorax black, spotted with red below; pro- thorax with two red spots above. Abdomen black, with two lateral red spots at the base. «This species is closely allied in form to P. Idus [Evagoras], but is at once known by the different position and form of the white spot on the anterior wings and the broader, differently-coloured band of the posterior. Its short antenne also are a good distinguishing character, giving somewhat the appearance of a Parnassius.”— Ann. Nat. Hist. The width across the wings is 3! 1!"", In Collection (Brit. Mus.) from Honduras. Male.—The primary wings deep black, with a few white marks between the nervules next the posterior angle ; a small white space, which is divided into three small spots by the anterior part of the median nervure and the base of the first median nervule. The posterior wings deep black, with the outer margin between the nervules white; a transverse curved band of bright carmine, which touches the nervure that forms the discoidal cell and is divided into six distinct lengthened spots by the nervules ; the first from the inner margin short, broad, and apparently divided into two; the second and third the longest ; the two next gradually decrease in size, while the sixth is the smallest and subquadrate. The under surface of the primary wings is bronzy black, showing the same white mark in the middle as is exhibited on the upper side. The under surface of the secondary wings bronzy black, with the outer margin between the nervules white ; the transverse band below the discoidal cell is composed of smaller spots than on the upper side, and they are buffy white, with the hinder part crimson ; the base of the wings is ornamented with four large spots of deep crimson, and a line runs along the inner margin of the same colour. The width across the wings is 3! 8!!’, Female.—Like the figure (Pl. VII. f. 3.), but is much larger, being 3 inches 10 lines across the wings. It also differs in having a larger space of white in the fore part of the discoidal cell of the primary wings, and in wanting the minute spot of white scattered scales below the second median nervule.
