NOTE.

The favor with which the first edition of this list was received leads me to feel that it supplied a want among fern collectors, and, as that edition is now nearly exhausted, the second has been prepared with a number of additions and alterations, and, I think, improve- ments.

tn Prof. Eaton has revised the old list and again permits me to use • ' his name as endorsing this. At his suggestion certain doubtful >_ species are referee! to the species of which they are probably varieties. ^ The so called varieties O.cinnamomea,frondosa,SiV\d. O. sensibilis, •ustlobata are omited, as are all English names. The many ~" changes and additions render it necessary to omit the numbers pre- viously used.

5s It is probable that some species now admitted to the list will prove <\i to be only varieties of other species : as P. intermedium, and P. § falcatum.

Others are doubtful as natives of this country, having been placed . as North American hastily or erroneously by early authors. O At the suggestion of several friends, a change has been made in •£ the tvpe, which is judged to be an improvement.
