Leaving Berea to enter a changing and challenging World, the graduating class of 19} 5 faces the future with high hope ami stalwart courage. We hope to justify the faith which our parents and teachers have in us by objectively facing with open minds the controversial issues and problems in our existing social order. Firmly denouncing the evils and build- ing onto the best and noblest principles of our national society, we direct our energy to the pro- motion of a more equitable order. Our hopes are unlimited, but our only promise is to devote our lives, with whatever success or failure time may bring, to the thoughtful service of humanity in accordance with our interpretation of its needs.

DONOR JOHN RAPHAEL ROGERS
The J. A. R. Rogers Memorial Art Building is the gift of the late John R. Rogers, in memory of his father, and is the climax of a long period of usefulness to Berea.
Born in Roseville, Indiana, in 18 56, the younger Rogers came to Berea in 1858 with his father, the first principal of the school, and lived a hard life among the pioneers. He became a trustee of the institution in 1898 and held that position until his death on February 18, 1934, at his home in Brooklyn, New York.
The donor was an educator and civil engineer. The world remembers him chiefly for his service to the printing industry. He was connected with the Mergenthaler Linotype Company and patented the amazing total of about five hundred improvements on the type-setting machines now in common use in the newspaper plants of the world.
So long as the College Press exists Berea cannot forget Dr. Rogers' contribution to the printing art, but here he will be longest remembered by his substantial donation on behalf of the fine arts.
MRS. W. G. FROST
Mrs. Frost was the first art teacher in Berea. Her teaching started in the year, 1895, and she had sole charge until 1902 when Miss Welsh came. A description of the course offered in 1901 is found in the catalogue: "A general course in the history of art, the characteristics of more prominent nations and periods. Art as an expression of the best ideals and aspirations. Lectures will be given to supple- ment some simple manual and a large number of photographs will be available for illustration." This course was taught by Mrs. Frost who had supple- mented her study with visits to the great art gal- leries of Europe and America.
MISS MARY E. WELSH
Miss Mary E. Welsh was the art teacher in Berea from 1902 to 1932 when she retired from her duties as Dean of Women and instructor in Greek and Art. To this pioneer woman much credit is due for the achievement of the department of art. She started the Berea Chapter of the American Federa- tion of Arts and was its president for five years. Her enthusiasm inspired many friends to give donations in the form of equipment. Miss Welsh's training had been most adequate, studying at Marburg, Ger- many; the Sorbonne, Paris, after being graduated from Wellesley College. Her thirty years of service were given whole-heartedly to "the making" of Berea College.
MRS. KENNETH GOULD
Mrs. Kenneth Gould came to Berea in the fall of 1932 as head of the Art Department. She is a grad- uate of Wooster, with special work in dramatics and stage design. In 1928 she was a student of the harp under G rand j any at the Fontainebleau School of Music, Fontainebleau, France. She holds the M.A. degree in Fine Arts from Oberlin, and was the holder of the Carnegie graduate fellowship in Fine Arts at Radcliffe and the Fogg Museum, Harvard 1930-1931 and 1931-1932. Her efforts were largely- responsible for the Metropolitan Exhibit in the New Art Building at the time of its dedication, as well as the fine display of handicraft.

The Alpha Iota chapter of the Alpha Psi Omega honorary dramatic fraternity was established in Berea in 1932. The purpose of the fraternity is to provide an honor society for those doing a high standard of work in dramatics, and incidentally through the ex- pansion of Alpha Psi Omega among the colleges of the United States and Canada, pro- vide a wider fellowship for those interested in the college theatre. The fraternity is not intended to take the place of the regular dramatic club or other producing groups, but as students qualify, they are rewarded by election to membership in this society. To earn the rights to membership in this fraternity is an accomplishment to be proud of, as the requirements are high. One must serve as an apprentice member of the dramatic club until a certain number of projects are worked off, and then must do enough of com- mendable acting in public productions until twenty points have been earned. The number of credit points given for each play varies from one to nine depending upon the number of lines each actor or actress has. Therefore, anyone who becomes eligible for membership has put at least two or three years of hard work into the art of acting. This year there are to be initiated into Alpha Psi Omega seven new members: Elbert Johns, Ezra Jones, Helen Ellis, Helene Runnion, Howard Burdine, Irene Pennington, and Dorothy Slaughter. These people are to be commended for the high type of work w!iich they have exhibited in earning their right to membership to a fraternity that promotes a highly creative art.

Outstanding accomplishments have been made in forensics during the past year. Oratory, debate, and "Forum Speaking" have each had sufficient emphasis to enable a large number of students, interested in the art of public speaking, to participate to advantage.
Tau Kappa Alpha, a national forensics society, has received the membership of a num- ber of Berea students this year. This includes full-fledged and associate members, the former being those who have represented the college in some line of public speaking two different years, and the latter having represented the college one year.

An Open Forum was held January 7, 193 5, on the question of socialized medicine vs. free medicine. The speakers who presented their own plan were Miss Clarice Crum- ley, Clarence McCall, Walter Gunkler, and Elzie Wesley. Their plans as presented were, respectively: group insurance, socialized medicine the "fee system," and com- pulsory insurance.
The winner of the Women's Home Oratorical Contest held February 26, was Miss Helen Ellis. Her winning oration was "Black and White," dealing with the problem of race prejudice. Miss Lillie Bennett ranked second with "Up Again America," an ac- count of the failure of the repeal to bring back the millenial dreams of the anti-pro- hibitionists. With the oration entitled "Demagogues Triumphant," concerning America's reasons for not entering the World Court, Miss Clarice Crumley came in a close third. Berea's woman representative in the state contest, Miss Ellis, took first place with the same speech she gave here.
Mr. Arthur Woodruff was the winner of the Men's Home Oratorical Contest speak- ing on "An Appeal to Intelligence." He emphasized the necessity for the American people doing their own thinking instead of reading the newspapers and accepting their word as law. Mr. Walter Brown took second honors with his "Schools on the Auction Block," and Waymon Smith captured the decision for third place with "Egypt — Wilder- ness— Canaan." Mr. Woodruff represented the college in the men's division of the state contest held at Morehead, March 2.
March 28, six debate teams from Berea participated in a Round Robin Tournament held in Lexington on the Transylvania campus. The two girls' teams were composed of Misses Clarice Crumley and Lillie Bennett and Floe Elliott and Irene Pennington. The boys' teams were Walter Brown, Carlton Hastings; Carlton Miller, Cecil Culbertson; Norman Moore, Paul Gambill; Joe Janes, Grady Crisp. The question "Resolved that the Nations Should Agree to Prevent the International Shipment of Arms and Muni- tions" was discussed. Each individual speaker was ranked by each person against whom he debated. On this basis of evaluation, Mr. Walter Brown and Mr. Carlton Miller tied for first place, and Miss Clarice Crumley came in as a close second. The team com- posed of Walter Brown and Carlton Hastings ranked second among the 30 teams and Miss Clarice Crumley and Miss Lillie Bennett as a team ranked third.
At the national convention of Tau Kappa Alpha held in Cincinnati, April 12 and 13, Miss Clarice Crumley and Mr. Carlton Miller represented Berea in the discussions on "Should the United States Refuse to Send Arms and Munitions to Europe in Case of Future European Wars." John Fenn entered the after-dinner speaking competition and won first place on the subject "What Should Congress Do?" His speech will be pub- lished in the Tau Kappa Speaker, the official publication of the fraternity; also in the Year Book of College Speaking. Both Miss Crumley and Mr. Miller won in one of their two discussion groups. In an audition given student speakers at radio station WLW, Miss Crumley was ranked first among the women's voices.
Representatives to the tournaments held jointly by the Southern Association of Teachers of Speech and Tau Kappa Alpha in Spartanburg, South Carolina, April 16 and 17 were: Misses Clarice Crumley and Lillie Bennet, and Arthur Woodruff and Carlton Miller. The team composed of Misses Crumley and Bennett and Mr. Miller won first place in the Tau Kappa Alpha debate tourney and received a beautiful loving cup. Mr. Arthur Woodruff also won a cup when he took first place in the Tau Kappa Alpha oratorical contest with his oration entitled "Invisible Government." The debate team won second place in the Southern Association of Teachers of Speech Tournament on the question "Resolved: That the nations should agree to prevent the international shipment of arms and munitions." Miss Crumley also represented the college in extemporaneous speaking, and Mr. Miller entered the after-dinner speaking competition.
Mr. J. W. Sattler is forensics chairman. His devotion to the forensics activities is largely responsible for the outstanding success of Berea students in their competition with various colleges.

CAPTAIN SAMUEL CAMPBELL
Anyone who witnessed the melees in the Seabury Gym this year can say that "Burrhead" was the pivot man extraordinary around which the whole structure was built. After three years of first string service Sam leaves with better than a 12 point game average.
COACH OSCAR GUNKLER
Coach Gunkler with his reserved manner has year after year produced a winning team of sports- men. His use of zone defense and fast -breaking of- fense make his coaching unique. Friendly, likable, and fun -loving, he has won a place in the hearts of students as well as players.
LLOYD ROBERTS
Any fan can justly comment that Captain Gard- ner's running mate, Lloyd Roberts, improved more than any other man during the season. If Lloyd doesn't labor too strenuously this summer he prom- ises to go a long way toward filling "Red" Sharp- ton's shoes.
MAJOR GARDNER
Maje has been elected to lead the team next year. Due to technicalities he was out of the lineup the first semester and played under a handicap when he did enter the lineup, but his very presence in- stilled in his teammates a victorious spirit.
KENNETH OCKERMANN
"Kenney" is a little man but very powerful. He is a Soph who will be expected to fill in a gap in next year's lineup. Standing barely over five feet, he has satisfactorily proven his ability to compete with the "big time" around the basket.
EARL WHEELER
"Shag," another product of the Academy, uses the same grace as a forward that he uses as one of the state's best quarter milers. He is fast, cool, and an accurate floor man. As a senior for next year the "Shag"-"Maje" forward combination promises sig- nificance.

JOHN ADAMS
The coolness and confidence with which John plays is unique and produces stability to the team and admiration from the fans. As a Soph he is expected to become one of the state's outstanding guards in the next two years.
HAROLD CLARK
"H. B." is another promising sophomore who will land a berth on the regular 1936 quintet. Harold is a hard worker around the baskets and will give someone a run for his money at forward next year.
WILBURN EVERSOLE
"Tim" is not only a constant player but also is an "A" individual with the text books. He has one more year in which he will without doubt do regu- lar duty at Guard for the Mountaineers.
JACK WRIGHT
A W-right good man still carries on a W- right tradition — that of getting the tip-off over tower- ing enemy basketeers. The six-footer's free throw accuracy went far in making victorious margins for the Blue and White this year.
JOHN DENNIS
John recovered the oval off the backboard right along this season and reminded the fans of the All- State Sharpton. Dennis is only a Soph this year and before his graduation in 1937 should be all-state material.

Although predicted in the outset by major and minor sports critics to finish in the immediate vicinity of the cellar in K.I.A.C. circles the Berea Mountaineers, with Camp- bell the only regular from last year, sprang a pleasant surprise by registering seven victories in twelve contests to merit a percentage well above the 500 mark and land in third place on the K.I.A.C. scale. The highlights of the season were the Mountaineers' double victory over the Eastern Maroons and the continued march of triumph in home games. It is more than two years now since the team has suffered defeat on the home court.
After losing Clarence Sharpton and Briscoe Evans (all S.I. A. A. basketeers), John White, Walter Combs, and Emerson Elatcher, via the degree route, and Major Gardner through ineligibility, the Mountaineers faced the most powerful alumni aggregation ever to return to the Seabury Gymnasium. Loss of the game by a 3 8-17 score did not mean nearly so much as the injury sustained by Blair, all S.I. A. A. guard, which retired him for the season.
Then with only one mainstay surviving from the quintet that thrilled tournament fans at Jackson, Mississippi, last year, the Mountaineers journeyed to Williamsburg to battle Cumberland Junior College with only a fifty-fifty choice to win. The dope bucket was upset — Berea 5 2, Cumberland 20.
Faintly remembering, after the holiday rest, the drubbing handed them by the alumni and their plastering of the Cumberland Maroons, the Mountaineers were edged out by the Wesleyan Bulldogs at Winchester.
After disposing of Transylvania in the first home game in a 5 3-32 fashion the Moun- taineers took a western swing on which they yielded to Murray 44-2 3, and to Western 52-41. Both of these fives, however, are in a class by themselves.
No sooner were the fans thrilled with a 45-22 thrashing of Morehead and a 37-36 hair-raiser over Louisville than Centre ended the winning streak by drubbing the Moun- taineers 5 2-40.
For the first time in five years the Mountaineers failed to succumb to the traditional jinx and handed the Maroons of Eastern a 32-31 defeat on their own floor.
The Georgetown Tigers were let down 30-28, but the Morehead Eagles took advantage of the Mountaineers on their own freak floor, to register a 31-28 triumph.
Eastern made a rather weak showing at revenge in the Seabury Gymnasium in the final home game, allowing the locals to come out on the long end of a 26-17 score.
The season's curtain puller with Union at Barbourville proved to be no breezer, the Mountaineers winning 37-3 6 in the shadow of the gunshot.

Although we lost such luminaries as Evans, Payne, Hatcher, White, and Sharpton in the 1934 graduating class, our goal is another State Championship.
To date we have lost to the University of Cincinnati 89-42, to the University of Kentucky 84-47, and in a triangular meet with Centre and Eastern the score was: Centre 80, Berea 53, and Eastern 3.
We have reason to feel that we have not been at our best in any of these meets, since our men have consistently turned in better performance in daily practices than in these meets. Stewart stepped off the two-mile in 9:5 5 one brisk afternoon (6l/z seconds better than the State record), and a day later Nesbitt pushed the shot 42 ft. 3 in. In the meet with Cincinnati, E. Wheeler ran the 440 in 51:5 which clips a fraction off the Berea record that he set last year. Carter has been consistent in taking the 880 and mile.
In the State Meet, which is to be held on our track, we are expecting big things from the four men mentioned above, with the added assistance of Waller, Almon, W. Wheeler, McDaniel, Byron, and Ezzard.
The Frosh, strong in all the running events, and with a couple of good weight men, also have visions of a State Championship.

TENNIS
Losing but one man from last season's KIAC championship team, the Berea netters have possibly the strongest team that Coach Quimby has ever displayed on the clay. To aid the letter men, Gardner, Roberts, McCall, and Byron, there have emerged from Freshmen seclusion three promising players, Henry Gardner, "Sparky" Adams and Lecoq Williams. Each of these have had opportunity to face competition this season and are expected to be the outstanding performers in years to come.
Major Gardner, who seems to have a firm grasp on number one position, has polished up his game of last year by an increase of speed. Roberts, captain of this season's team, is holding tenaciously to the second position. Byron and McCall, seniors of the squad, are playing improved tennis and will be missed by the team next year.
The season leaked into a rainy start with two losses. The first was to the University of Cincinnati who blasted out a six to three victory in a closely fought match. Univer- sity of Kentucky outpointed the Mountaineers by a seven to two score in the next test. The third, but first KIAC tilt, came against Eastern, who fell before the faster racquets of the Bereans six to one. There are to be several more matches before, and in prepara- tion for, the KIAC Tournament which is to be held on the home courts again this spring. Just ask the fellows where that tennis trophy is going to make its home!

, AN OPEN LETTER TO THE CLASS OF 193 5
My dear Friends:
This is at once a sort of farewell and a message of welcome — farewell to you as under- graduates and welcome to you as alumni. I welcome you to the alumni ranks with as much cordiality as you were welcomed to the campus four years ago. You are entering upon a life which is just as much an integral part of the College as has been your student days.
In Washington the other day I heard of a Scotchman who went to a livery stable to rent a horse. The attendant said, "How long do you want the horse?" The Scotchman replied, "Bring out the longest one you have, there are four of us going."
I am presuming that this year-book will be kept and treasured; that it will become more precious as its pages become yellower and yellower with age. Suppose you read this forty or fifty years from now, what truth if any will you find upon this page?
I do not know; but like the Scotchman, I am going to invite you to bring out today (June 1, 1935) the longest horse you have for I believe there are four of us going, and that as long as you pick up this book and read it there will be still the four of us in the saddle — the home, the church, the government, and the college.
Despite the restive jibs of modern wiseacres or the licentious cries of those who advo- cate undisciplined freedom in everything, the simple, consecrated home must go along. The bliss of adolescent idealism in its dream of the home that is to be is not less than the abiding joys which come of that realization in maturer years. The home as an insti- tution is too much the experienced product of countless ages of man to be discarded as a puff.
The same is true of the church. It will have its lagging periods, but it too is deeply rooted and is challenging to your support.
And what of government? What it will be in future years as you read this none of us know. But there will be government, and it should be drawing into its service better trained men and women than it is doing today. You as college men and women must be interested and active that our social order shall incorporate as much justice, and freedom, and mercy, and security as man in his limited wisdom can create and maintain.
Along with the support of the home, of the church, and of the government, I believe that you will want to support your College. And when I say this, I am not thinking in terms of finance alone although that is important. You are a graduate of Berea College; your diploma will never be taken away from you. Your action tomorrow will reflect in no uncertain terms upon trie College. In turn what Berea College is tomorrow will reflect upon you either for good or bad. Should it sink into disrepute then your diploma is but a faded flower, an empty symbol of a day that is spent. Through everything that may face you from this day forward, Berea College is your Alma Mater; I doubt if any circum- stance should ever lead you to withdraw your interest and support.

ACADEMY LITERARY SOCIETIES
This year, 1934-3 5, was a very successful year in the public inter-society contests, with Victoria winning over Lenorian by only one-half a point, and Pi Sigma winning with a lead of only 7 points over Adelphic.
The season opened in October with the Story Telling Contest. Here Artis Hillman of Adelphic won first honors, Margaret Holbrook of Victoria second, and Clista Chand- ler of Sororian third. This year the interest in the Story Telling was heightened by having the stage set for a home scene about a fireplace and the stories told informally in this natural atmosphere.
In the men's Declamation Contest, John Castle and Oswald McLean of Pi Sigma won first and second places respectively, and Edward Campbell of Sigma Tau third. In the girl's Declamation Contest, Leona Scott and Marie Rigsby of Aelioian won first and third places respectively, and Pauline Smith of Lenorian took second place.
During January no public contests were held, because preparations for mid-semester examinations had the right of way, but early in February John Castle and Oswald Mc- Lean of Pi Sigma broke forth in a burst of oratory and carried off first and second places, while James Kelly of Adelphic came in third.
In the girl's Essay Contest, Victoria made a strong push toward the cup by Rosalie Mullins winning first place and Margaret Holbrook tying with Evelyn Guinn for third place, while Bernice Centre of Lenorian used "Caprillic Quadrupeds" to bring in second honors. A memorial feature of this contest was the natural setting given to Evelyn Guinn's charming essay on "Rain" for just as she began to read the waters descended from the sky in torrents.
In the Public Discussion Contest, William Blair of Adelphic won first place, Hansel McCown of Beta Alpha second, and Earl Marlowe of Pi Sigma third. A variation was made in this contest by having two subjects used for the evening's discussion instead of one as in former years.
The girl's societies held three rounds of oral reading contests, each society furnishing two teams of three members each, and each team reading against one team of each of the other societies. The final score showed Victoria and Lenorian tied for points in these, with Aelioian a close second.
In the men's inter-society debates the subject was "The Matter of Federal Control of Education." After various experiences, including valuable help from Mr. Hackett, as coach, three affirmative and three negative teams met to debate, having six battles staged in two days. When the dust of battle cleared away it showed Adelphic and Beta Alpha with one undefeated team each and Adelphic winner of the series.
The After-Dinner Speaking Contest was the closing event of the series. This also was given with a natural setting, Dean Shutt acting as toastmaster in his inimitable way and Alfred Lay starring as the French Garcon. The theme was "And We Went to Wash- ington." The Supreme Court rendered the decision which gave first place to James Goforth of Sigma Tau, second place to Earl Marlowe of Pi Sigma, and third place to Rosalie Mullins of Victoria.
The final mathematical operations performed upon the scoreboard showed Victoria the victor of Lenorian by one-half of one point, and Pi Sigma the winner by seven points. The final standings of the societies were: Pi Sigma 2 3 points, Adelphic 16 points, Beta Alpha 7 points, and Sigma Tau 6 points, Victoria 16V2 points, Lenorian 16 points, Aelioian 9'4 points, and Sororian 2 points.
We of the eight societies on the Academy campus owe our thanks and hearty grati- tude for the splendid cooperation of Mrs. J. N. Peck. She has helped make arrangements for all the public contests, and in her quiet way has been the director behind the scenes of all society activities.
In the first semester Willard Ratliff of Sigma Tau was president of the Inter-Society Council, and during the second semester, Carlos Reed held the gavel.
